Anyone install speakers in the Cowl Vents?

Has anyone done this? if so, what did you use to keep the dirt and grime from getting on the speaker? Please post so pics.. I'm getting ready to install some music and I want be using the vents.

I'm with you Rudy. I'd like some info too. It seems like a cool place to put the speakers. I guess one way would be to seal off the inlets to the vent.

Yeah I thought about that too, remove the flap get some sheet metal and weld it closed.

I did it when I was 15. Worst idea I ever had about my truck...this is the worst place to put speakers. You have to not only cut open the kick panel but cut out the curved section of the cowl vent and then your speaker magnet it totally exposed to the elements and your a/c won't work properly. Not saying it can't be properly done, but the amount of work it would take makes it pointless unless it's a full custom build.

The lower door is a much easier place if you want to recess speakers.

I'm trying to get away from any hacking on the door panel. I think that is the worst place to put speakers. It's hard enough to find good doors without cutting big holes in them.

Thanks for the info but I'm definitely not cutting holes in the doors. I'm thinking I can get 5.5 or 6.5 speakers in there with doing any cutting at all. I will weld the vent close to seal it from the elements.

What I did was removed the whole vent door including the case. After that remove the door for the case. I then cut a piece of plexi glass for the back of the vent housing (we will call it that instead ) and used silicone to glue it on so the elements would not get to the speaker.
I then got aonther piece of plexiglass and cut it for the speaker side, drilled holes and used the original bolt holes to put it back. I also drilled a hole to bring the speaker wire back out to hook up to the radio. I am sure you don't have to use plexi glass. I just had some laying around. I am sure using sheetmetal for the speaker side would be ok. Just use the original holes.

I hear you on the doors, I did not want to cut mine but trust me the kick panels are not a good place to start cutting. I had 6.5's in there and there was no getting around messing up the cowl vent, can't go high or low enough to stay out of it. I repaired all that mess later down the road and now I have the kick panel surface mount speakers. I recommended the doors because between the two places to start cutting, they are easier to cut, easier to repair and less exposed to weather. If you must though, to answer your original question, there are foam baffles that could be used to weatherize:

I did mine like Chevy Fleetside- removed the vent assy, capped off the back side and sealed it up. I used 6.5" speakers that would not fit inside the vent housing, so I mounted mine to a piece of 3/8" plywood, then installed the vent housing, then my speaker panel. The previous owner had drilled a 1" hole in the drivers side of the dash, so I enlarged it, then drilled a matching one on passenger side to mount my remote tweeters. I also have 2 6 X 9's in the rear on a speaker panel and amp mount I made.

I did mine over 10 years ago. No pics.
I made some boxes and mounted 6x9's behind the seat. I dont think it works all that great though. The sub sounds better when the seat is flipped forward. It is time to update all this stuff.
