Painting inner fenders - what did you use?

Looking for recommendations on what paint to use.

My body shop is painting bed liner inside my fenders.
On the flat part of the steps, too.

I painted them to match the body on the last build but am still in the pondering stage this time. The reason being that last time it was an all out "street rod" pickup build with lots of aluminum and the matching inner fenders and painted bottom side of the hood matched the build but this time I am going for a build that "possibly" could have been done around 1957 by a custom shop and want things to jive with what would have been in vogue then.

I think Eastwood and some others have the proper no gloss black if you want to go that way or just use the same paint as you use on the body if you want to go body color.

Agreed - I painted the inner fenders of the engine compartment to match.

I hadn't worded it right but was looking for ideas on the inside of the fender well itself (outer?). I was thinking of the Eastwood products but will definitely look into the bed liner option and go from there.

i think i used body color on truk
underside is rhinoliner bed liner
also bed liner on the bottom of the cab, starting 2'' below the vertical firewall

oem would be body color on firewall and black on inner fenders

I coated the outside of the inner fender with POR15 waited for it to cure then scuffed it and sprayed some rocker guard material over top of it

I did almost the same, POR15/ etching primer/ standard primer then top coat with bed liner. For the engine compartment side I did the same except for the top coat was the engine compartment paint vs bedliner

We used bed liner inside the cab, under the cab, under the running board, under the inner and outer fenders.

I'm getting mine powder coated . Wheel well side semi gloss black. Engine compartment side most likely the same, maybe.

I do like the matching paint look. Must be the Pentastar influence parked in the garage.

I also like the idea of bed liner on the step bottom in the cab. Another great place to use it would be the inside of the fenders and the firewall in the wheel well area.

The reason I used spray on bed liner is to provide a soft cushion to protect the thin metal used in the body parts because when a rock is thrown up against those areas that I sprayed bed liner on there is a chance a small dent will be the end result. The bed liner will provide a cushion that will absorb the impact of the rock and prevent this dent. Hopefully the powder coating will do the same.

I was down at the auto body supply and saw they have a bedliner spray kit, with spray gun, 4 quarts liner and activator for around 125.00. looks like it can be hosed on to about 3/16" thickness from the sample I saw. I too will do the underside cab, cab floor and under fenders with it. I am thinking about doing the top of the cab steps with it and going over it with the body color. I'll have to check with the supplier to see if it's possible and practical to paint over the product.

Sounds like a raptor bed liner kit. Great stuff and be tinted whatever color you want. Just finished spraying it on the underside of my toneu cover and in the box and had it tinted the body color

I coated the inner fenders with POR15 waited for it to be slightly stick to the touch, then put a coat of flat black on. Also doing the same thing on the inside and underneath the cab.

NAPA auto also has the same or similar in a roll-on product for better control and less overspray problems. I prefered the undercoating product on the inside of fenders, lower firewall and bottom of cab because it is "rubberized" and stays somewhat flexible. Inside of bed, bedliner is what I will use.

I am counting on the fender undercoat to cushion against the flying pea gravel on my new metal!

Regarding tintable bedliner, here is what my body shop says:
"WE CAN GET TINTABLE BED LINER .
I HAVE SEEN A LOT AND THE COLOR LOOKS LIKE YOU WERE
TRYING TO MATCH PAINT BADLY. COLOR CONTRAST I THINK
LOOKS BEST. BLACK IS SET OFF VERY GOOD BY OFF WHITE."

Southern Polyurethanes (SPI) black epoxy primer for me. No topcoat necessary.

It's a semi-gloss and looks just like chassis black. Did my frame and suspension in it too.

I wanted to offset the darkness of the green with a contrasting, accent color on my '58. Although the grill and bumpers look white in these pics, they're really cream.




So I did the inner fenders the same when I had them off to help break things up a little:

I had the engine compartment interior pieces powder coated in a gloss black. The outside of the truck is matte black, so it provides a little contrast and it wasn't any more expensive than having the restoration shop paint them. I like the durability factor too

Did you fill all the assorted holes in the inner fenders?

Seems like welding/grinding them shut will eliminate them, but will make uneven-ness be MORE pronounced under powder coating. Under paint at least you could use a minor amount of body filler.
