64c10 Wont start

I have a 64 c10 I bought 2 years ago, been sitting in garage since the 1990's old man died and his wife sold it. She had hoses and wires and seals replaced before selling. When i bought it, it ran good but had some starting issues. I could always push start it if i had too though. I got a new job and moved and havent had much time to drive/work on it. Driven once a month for last 18-20months. I replaced the starter in october, and she started right up I drove her around town for a little while and got her warm. Since that time, once she gets warm and driven a little she wont start up again when the engines hot? acts like shes not getting any fuel. I have been busy with work and havent worked on her since NOV/Dec. Tried to start her up today and got nothing. No click no sounds no anything. Batteries brand new. Im not much of a mechanic have been learning as I go so any advice would be greatly appreciated. IT has the 283 v8 all original with 3 on tree.

Re: 64c10 Wont start

So the problem is it does nothing or is cranking over but not starting? These are two completely different problems.
Just wanting to be sure I understood, that now it will not crank over or do anything?

But before, after it was drive/warmed up, it would crank over, but not start?

I battery tests good ( cranks but acts like no fuel) pull the line off at the carb, run the line into a 1 liter water bottle, crank again for 3 seconds and see how much fuel you have in the bottle. It should be about half full. If no fuel, check for plugged filter, diaphragm in the pump torn ( needs a pump) restriction in fuel line from tank to pump etc.

Re: 64c10 Wont start

Subscribing to watch this one for suggestions. My 65 with a freshly rebuilt 230 just started doing something similar today. After a bit of driving, stopped for gas. It turned over slowly and didn't want to start at first. Dropped by mechanic's shop and battery was borderline, so I dropped in a new one. Everything is charging fine (new alternator), good voltage back to the battery, and as far as the starting system, everything checked out. Made another stop a few miles down the road and she turned over really slow and sputtered. Took a couple tries to get it started, but ran well after.

Re: 64c10 Wont start

For all of these starting problems the place to begin (especially a vehicle that's been sitting) is to clean all the electrical connections. Battery posts, negative grounds, all the terminals on the starter, even the ignition switch under the dash if the cab takes on water. This will help keep you from buying batteries and starters, etc. that aren't bad. Once you have an electrical system that cranks the engine fast and fires the plugs strong then you can move on to the fuel delivery system.
Avoid telling us it acts like it's not getting X or X-ing. Just the symptoms.

Re: 64c10 Wont start

There is a yellow wire on the starter selonoid that connects opposite of the purple wire. this wire runs to the positive side of the coil when the starter is cranking the engine over. It gives the coil a full 12 volts when starting. the wire to the coil from the ignition switch is a resistor wire to keep from overheating the coil. I think that might be the problem.

Re: 64c10 Wont start

When you had your cranking & no start problem did you check your rubber fuel line under the truck that connects the fuel float assembly to the hard line? Mine was badly cracked, not leaking any fuel but apparently sucking air.

Now with you getting nothing & battery is good have you checked the connector at the firewall next to the drivers side hood hinge? All inside power goes through that connector. I only say this because after washing my engine compartment I had nothing. No interior lights, no horn no start nothing and discovered I had knocked my connector off at the firewall.

not sure, but i don't think his starter is going. Check all connections for the battery and starter.

Re: 64c10 Wont start

I've had this issue three different times on two different vehicles (neither of them a C10): once it was bad battery connections, once it was the crankshaft position sensor, and once was a bad starter. I'm thinking it's something electrical.

Yes, My Pappy would tell me to clean all my battery connections first off if you have no action with the key,

Re: 64c10 Wont start

Following up on my starting issue posted above. On the advice given I replaced the old #4 battery cables with #2. Added a ground strap from the block to the frame (used an existing bolt hole in the block next to the oil check tube), and made sure starter, battery, and new ground strap connections were clean and had a little smear of dielectric grease. So far I have not had any more issues. Thanks for the help.
