What fan are you using on your LS conversion?

I was planning on using the stock clutch fan that came with the LQ9 motor. I have been hearing though, that you cannot use the fan and shroud because it doesn't fit, and I would need to go electric.

Is anyone using a clutch fan instead of electric fans?

Thanks!

Re: What fan are you using on your LS conversion?

While I have not yet done one one a 67-72, I have in a 68 LeMans convert. I did this many years ago before it was popular like 2005 or 2006. I used the fan clutch and fan off off the 6.0 truck motor I used. So surely you can use one on a truck using the mounts of today. You will love it.

I had plan to use the fan clutch out of the 6.0 in mine but using the stock 71 Chevy truck radiator it wasn't going to work along with the intake Mass air flow senor. The two of them were right in the fan area. The shroud was cut up to try and make it work but in the end I went electric.

If you buy the new radiator that mounts the top hose on passenger side then it should be Ok I would think.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: What fan are you using on your LS conversion?

I installed a LQ9 6 liter into my 1968 c10 last year. I used the early classic enterprise engine mounts and trani mount. The original fan with clutch hub works good. I just have the small fan guard on the top of the rad and everything clears. I also still have the original two core rad with Evans Waterless coolant and it seems to keep the 6 liter cool in the summer heat so far.

Andy,

where did you get those electric fans? The fit looks good and they look pretty clean!

I'm using Dodge Intrepid fans. Cheap as hell at the junkyard, and they really move some air.

I welded threaded aluminum bosses to my radiator, and bolted the fan to those.

My stock 5.3 fan fits the original small block fan shroud on my 71 like it was made for it. There's pics in my build threads in my sig.

Same here! Wasn't a challenge at all with my 4.8 clutch fan

Re: What fan are you using on your LS conversion?

Thanks for all the input! For those that are using the clutch fan and original shroud, how was the engine mounted? And was it mounted in the stock position? Did you have to cut out and add a high transmission hump?

Thanks!

Re: What fan are you using on your LS conversion?

My LQ9 didint come with a fan.. so I picked up a two speed 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee fan... fits in the factory small block shroud. I just used a couple bolts through the side.

Re: What fan are you using on your LS conversion?

Hi Steve, I installed a 2001 5.3 with fan clutch, used the 2001 truck mounts, and made my own motor mount perches so i didn't have header and gm low mount ac compressor clearance issues. In the midst of mocking up my ac lines now. I recently pulled the motor to remove the truck oil pan and install the f-body oil pan, nice clearance now. My suggestion to you is this (if i did it all over again), use either trailblazer mounts and brackets of 98-02 f-body mounts and brackets (ls-1) and then fab this to bolt to your stock cross member and avoid header headers rubbing on stock perches on the top of the frame rail, avoid ac compressor issues (if using gm type) when installing dirty dingo style adapter plates. I realize my approach isn't the norm, as a lot of people like the convenience of the dirty dingo plates, but i love to do fab work and i have no clearance issues and no regrets! Good luck, Brian Fuller.

Re: What fan are you using on your LS conversion?

I'm using a '95 crown vic electric fan. But I probably could have used the stock clutch fan.
I used some cheap ebay engine mount adapters in the middle location, stock '66 v8 style mounts and the stock perches in the rear location.

Re: What fan are you using on your LS conversion?

Using the stock 2007 clutch fan and currently no shroud (there wasn't one on the truck when I got it with a 350). From what I've heard, it should clear the stock shroud without too much hassle.

Re: What fan are you using on your LS conversion?

Thanks for the input guys!

I just put in an order with CPP and purchased the CCP Perch (new part they just released), CCP deluxe Trac Bar, Dough Thorley headers and the CCP Slider mounts. Going to post some pics in a new thread of CCP's new parts and their Chevy frame off resto they had at SEMA.

Working a double tonight, so will post when I get home in the morning.

Enjoy your weekend boys!
