Neutral safety switch.

I need a pic of the neutral safety switch on a 1964. And is there voltage going to it all the time. My truck starts in gear. It has an auto trans.

The auto trans neutral safety switch should look like this:

Both the neutral safety switch and reverse light switch are built into the same housing. So there are 2 pairs of terminals. The two perpendicular terminals (to the left in that pic) are for the reverse lights. And the two parallel terminals (to the right in the pic) are for the NSS.

The NSS has two purple wires and neither one of them is live all the time. One of those wires receives power from the ignition switch "SOL" terminal when the ignition switch is in the "start" position. When the shifter is in park or neutral, the NSS switch contacts are closed and it passes power on to the other purple wire that leads to the starter solenoid.

If your truck is equipped with factory reverse lights, it'll have a couple of green wires (light & dark green) going to the reverse light terminals on the switch.

A quick way to check to see if the NSS is simply out of adjustment would be to put the shifter into neutral and move it up & down while holding the key in the start position. To be on the safe side, set the parking brake or hold your foot firmly on the brake in case the engine ends up starting with the shifter in reverse or drive.

If the switch does need adjustment, it should have a slot & hole arrangement that will allow a pin (about 3/32" dia I think) to be inserted when in the "drive" position. Similarly, to install a new switch you pin it in that position, move the shifter to "drive" and align the notch in the switch with the tang on the shift tube in the column.
