Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

Well going to the DMV today to try and get this straightened out. They can do a certified history of the title on both vehicles. Will let you know what I find. Thanks for the info padresag. Once I find out then I will approach the PO and see what we can do to get this straight. I really like the truck as it is really a solid truck for 49 years old or 50 which ever it is........

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

Another question, if I have figured this right and the number I found on the frame is 5s203265 if I was to request a title search would the number I give them be C1445S203265? As when I submit this to a title search site it comes back as none found. Now when I submit the number on the title of 4c144s118226 it does come back as having found it? Am I submitting the number on the 65 wrong?

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

It most likely was a truck, a "4", but here are some other options that it could be,:
"2" -- Chassis & Cowl
"3" -- Chassis & Cab
"4" -- Pickup
"5" -- Panel
"6" -- Suburban
"9" -- Platform/Stake

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

Well going to the DMV on Good Friday was not a good idea................duh! Will have to go sometime next week. I was told that if I take the number off the frame and that number has not been registered in the last 10 years they will provide me with a new title and identification tag. I hope that is the case as like you say padresag I do not want to get into a problem down the line if, heaven forbid, I ever got into a bad accident with it.
Thanks again for the information padresag.

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

Maybe someone can help identify this frame? Truck VIN from the cab is C1546Zxxxxxx which is clearly a 1966 1/2 ton long bed from the Fremont plant. The truck itself is actually a short bed fleetside and there are no signs the frame has been altered to make it a short bed. I don't see any numbers on the frame in the normal places for that year. The only number on the frame I can find is on the left rail just under the door, but on the outward facing side of the rail not on top. Hard to read that whole number but here's a picture below.

Thanks for the great post.
Now I know my mutt is a 1964 1/2 ton short step side built in St Louis. Now to see if I can get a title for it.

Confused:
I have a C30 Flatbed that shows V.I.N. on Top Door Frame of:
C369 5Z153212
How do I decipher that?
Likely I have missed something in this older Forum, but sure appreciate any help
thanks

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

Found this number on the left frame rail of my 1963 C10 (in work) but it appears like some of the numbers are missing. What would the "J" mean?. The VIN tag is removed and lost.

I believe the J stands for Jainesville, Wi. the origin of manufacture. The build number is after that. or serial number.

I believe that is just the frame rail part number.

The VIN is normally (from what I have seen/read) on the top of the frame rail just in front of the steering box mount or most likely on top of the frame under the driver's door area.

It is really hard to tell a lot of times. There seems to be lots of variations/discrepancies on this...especially between the plants.

Thanks, I'll keep looking when I get back up there. Unfortunately the truck is in Utah and I am in CA.

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

Hey everyone. I've got a 66 and I've scoured the interwebs for something to "decode" my particular VIN with no luck. Everything lines up great with all the characters EXCEPT the 4th digit.

I can't figure out what that "3" means in the 4th character slot. A friend of a friend worked for Chevrolet for decades and has never seen anything like this. His best guess is that the truck was originally a chassis cab, but no decoders indicate that as an option. Anyone know what this means?

That is your VIN number, assuming its still the original frame. The frame "part number" is stamped on the side of the frame rail. The one in your picture is on top by the motor mount. If you need, there are people out there can reproduce a vin tag for these reasons.

You are most likely correct. . It was probably purchased/built as a cab/chassis. ..

I'm back to thinking there are some numbers missing then. The "J" could stand for Jainesville, Wi. The year should be in front of the "J" and the six following numbers are the serno.(?)

No numbers are missing from your frame stamp. Your frame IS stamped correctly. Here is my 1963 Short Fleet info. Different assembly plant but basically same thing. In 63 the year is the first "3" in the VIN tag . Last picture shows the part number stamped on the side of the frame under the door or rocker on drivers side. There will be THREE VIN numbers stamped all the same along the top of the drivers side rail.

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

60-66 is correct, also check out the #'s on post # 3 of this thread, they just put the year, assembly plant, and vin on the frame, all the other vin info was left off, apparently according to the pic of your 63, and 60-66's 63, they did not stamp the year date before the plant, like they did on the 65 and 66 that I pictured earlier in the thread,,,
as stated the "J" is for the Janesville plant.
