Replacing power steering box, upgrades?
I need to replace the power steering box in my 71 c10. It doesn't leak at all, but there is play in the steering wheel that I haven't been able to adjust out.
My question is, should I go with a reman OEM steering box, or is there an upgraded box? I recall reading in the past there was an updated box with a better steering ratio. Also, where is the best place to get one? Thanks in advance

Re: Replacing power steering box, upgrades?
The "upgrade" you are probably thinking about is probably the 73-76 OEM boxes which have fewer turns lock-to-lock. In fact, most parts places list the same part number from 1968-1976. I ordered an ACDelco reman for my 69 and got a faster ratio box. So far, I really like it.
Edit: The part number I ordered was 36-0517501. I did an internet search and got it for a net price of $95. Genuine ACDelco in an ACDelco box. I can't guarantee that all with that number are the faster ratio. Last edited by FirstOwner69; 05-17-2014 at 09:49 PM. |

Re: Replacing power steering box, upgrades?
I ordered a Lares quick ratio box from rockauto.com... It is 3.25 turns lock to lock and came with a new rag joint.. For less than 85 bucks after the core return and a 5% discount code i found on this site it was a no brainer..
Lares is a fantastic company that focuses on Power steering parts for classic vehicles.. Check them out

Exact fit including fluid line connections. If you have a match to the original pitman arm you should be good to go. I understand the later boxes were the same but had different line fittings.

I have this one, turns like a new car 1 1/2 turns. Pricey... paid $360 for it 6 months ago. Love it though.
