replacing clutch in 84 C10
Hi All!
I have an 84 C10 that needs a clutch. Would it be easier to pull the motor or the tranny to replace it? I would rather just sell it, but may need it if I can't get my 63 going anytime soon. Thanks!

it would be alot easier to drop the tranny than pull the motor for a clutch but youll need a good tranny jack its a little too heavy to lift into place luckilly its not hydraulic so it wont be that bad

Its not too hard to change a clutch in these trucks.
The problem is the tranny is heavy and makes it a little harder to insert into the clutch on reassembly. 2wd: Block the tires so the truck cant roll. Put trans in N Drain the trans if you would like. Put floor jack under trans, jack it up till it supports the trans but doesnt lift it (for support only). Take the brake cable off if its the type that runs near the trans. I believe in 84+ they run along the frame on the drivers side then cross over to the passenger side at the rear axle. Take the drive shaft off and put tape on the U joints to stop them from coming apart. This is a good time to change the U-Joints also. Make sure you have the wheels blocked or the truck will roll and maybe KILL YOU! Make sure your floor jack is supporting the trans well. Then loosen the trans mount bolt(s) (trans to crossmember). Slightly jack transmission up (just enough to get it off the crossmember). Take off all the crossmember bolts (and brackets if they exist). Remove the crossmember (and paint it because its probably nasty, paint the driveshaft while your at it) Lower the trans back down the same you lifted it up before (so its in the original position or close to it.). Be careful if you lower it too much you will snap the front cone. Unbolt the four bolts that hold the trans to the bell housing (make sure the jack is supporting the trans and hold onto it because it may shift a bit) A friend can be helpful here. Once you have the bolts off you can push the jack back while holding the trans and pull it out of the clutch. You can leave the trans under the truck out of the way or pull it out. Now you can take the pedal linkage off where it comes into the bell housing. Take the bell housing itself off. Take the pressure-plate off (has metal finger springs). The clutch disc will now be loose and fall down when you pull the pressure plate off. The pressure plate isnt real heavy but does have weight so be careful. Now that you have the pressure plate and clutch disc out you can see the flywheel. Run your fingers across it. If its bumpy you should have it resurfaced. Look for cracks and colors where it looks like it got too hot. In almost every case its worth the time and money to have it resurfaced (around $20-30). Check the teeth around the outside. These are the teeth that mesh with the starter. If any teeth are damaged it will give you problems with your starter (may need to replace flywheel, or teeth only if possible). When you take the flywheel off becareful because that b*tch is heavy. Take it to a clutch or trans shop and have them resurface it. Its like brakes they take off a small amount and its like new and gives proper friction for the clutch disc to "stick" properly. Re-assembly is basically the same except in reverse. The hard part is putting the trans into the clutch. Use the clutch tool that comes with the clutch to aligned the disc properly when bolting the pressure plate on (I can send you a cheap plastic alignment tool if you need it). Try to angle the trans as close to original as possible and line the front teeth up with the clutch disc. It will take some lifting and lowering of the jack to get it aligned and in. Have at least one friend to help you here its the hardest part for sure. Don’t lower the jack to much or youll snap the cone. One guy works the jack the other moves the trans around and try to get it in. Everything else is reverse of disassembly. If you have never done it before have at least one friend and a weekend. You can do it on a Saturday fairly fast if you have done it before. But expect to take sat and sun and take your time to make sure your not missing anything. I probably missed something, but that’s a lot of helpful information there. Good luck
