ok would it be a better choice to hook the vaccum on the dist. to the timed port on the carb or the full?

Full vacuum at idle is best. I have never run ported (timed) vacuum on any small block I've ever owned. But, there is more to it than just switching where the vacuum comes from. You have the amount of vacuum the stock canister has, which is way too much, especially for a 305.

If you don't have a vacuum advance canister, why are you worried about where to hook the vacuum hose?

The "ball" thing might be something completely different. The Vacuum Advance Canister is like the shape of a rounded pyramid thingy. I think the "ball" you're referring to is a vacuum canister for something else. (Like on our 91 Chevy 3/4 ton truck, the ball is for cruise control)
