Winter Drivers??
Hey guys, just wondering if/who drives their truck in the winter? Tried mine last winter and it drove like it was on skis. Tires are decent all weather, but I'm planning on getting a good set of winters.
I have a 2wd by the way. Sean |

Re: Winter Drivers??
I'll be driving mine all winter, but I don't have to deal with your white stuff.
You should be OK with some weight in the rear over the tires.

Re: Winter Drivers??
Since I still have a nearly new set of studded snow tires mounted on steel wheels I slap them on every winter and drive whenever I feel like it. I don't take it out in blizzard conditions however as the wipers aren't all that good. I also swap the wheels just to keep the road sprays off the aluminum Americans.
Long ago I carried 4-6 sand bags in the bed during winter. Since I put the bed cover back on, the bed is so full of stuff all the time I don't need any more ballast for winter conditions.

Re: Winter Drivers??
I have to agree with markeb01 I have drove mine in the winter in the past with 4 sandbags and a heavy all-terrain tire. Yes mine is a 4wd but most of the time I drove it in 2wd. Now that I am completely redoing it I fear its winter days are done, well maybe on a nice day.

Re: Winter Drivers??
Nothing like white knuckle driving going up and down snowy hills in a C10 and forget about controlled quick braking. There's no atheists in a C10 on a snowy day.

Re: Winter Drivers??
Sounds like I'm not alone here haha. I think some good snow tires and some sand bags will be good enough. Last winter the bags didn't want to stay over the axle since the truck had a pretty heavy rake. Trying to come up with a clever solution for that.
That picture is spot on! |

Re: Winter Drivers??
I drove my 62 here in salt lake a few years ago, and with the right tire, and careful driving, it did ok.
My 64 that i just recently picked up is now my daily driver, and it looks like I will have to drive it during the winter this year. I had a picture of my 62 in the snow, but i'll have to find it. |

Re: Winter Drivers??
Sean, During the winter In my daily driver I have made a crude H shaped brace out of 2x6's. The legs of the H will fit on both sides of the rear wheel tub's and I place my sandbags inside them this keeps the bags in place and leaves me room behind them to place "stuff". Sorry I do not have pics, right know I don't even have one I have used the wood in other projects.

Re: Winter Drivers??
Lived in Omaha and had a 2wd PU w/posi and snow tires for winter. Bought 4 bags of sand in the fall (2 over each rear wheel) and dropped em at first construction site in spring.
Never had trouble till bought a 4wd. You get a little too brave with 4wd. Haha

Re: Winter Drivers??
Studs and a posi are great, but will only get you so far without weight in the back. I have a fiberglass cap on the late-model PU I drive around here and then I stack solid concrete blocks directly over the axle. I strap those down good because I don't want them becoming projectiles in an accident.

Re: Winter Drivers??
I drove mine last winter and I hope I don't have to this year, North PA and salty roads. I got around on BFG Long Trails with 2) 12" maple logs cut to fit crosswise between the tailgate and wheelwells and ratchet strapped together.
After that 1 season I have rust showing on new chrome stuff under the hood. You can prolly just make out the logs in the bed. |

Re: Winter Drivers??
Drive my 50 every winter with sand bags behind the rear seat. The 65 hated the slick stuff. 383 posi and a shorter wheel base bannished it to the driveway. My buddies 76 we restored locked front and rear works great in the snow but not so much on the slick ice.
The key is a soft right pedal, lots of weight preferably behind the rear axle and a traction type tire or studs. The 50 Burb does really well with the 250 and the 700r4, but the weight of the roof along with the bags I think was the winning combo.
