Dash lights/Indicator lights

On my 61 Apache, are there suppose to be two turn signal indicator lights, one on the right side and one on the left side of the instrument cluster? Right now if I turn on the head lights or parking lights there is a round green light directly above the ignition key that lights up. This looks like it might be an indicator light but it does nothing when the turn signals are activated. Is it even suppose to be lit when the lights are on?

Re: Dash lights/Indicator lights

It does sound like one of the dash cluster illumination lights is in the hole for the turn signal indicator. On the '60-'63's there is only one indicator light for both left and right turn signals.

Re: Dash lights/Indicator lights

CaptainFab, is the indicator light directly above the ignition key and should it flash with the turn signals?

On my 60, there are 2 turn signal lights - one on the lower left and one on the lower right. It does sound as if there is a cluster light plugged into the turn light though. I'll try to find a pic and the diagram I made when I redid my speedometer.

Here's a pic of the left turn signal spot - it's below and in between the Temp and Gen gauge lights

This May or may not help. The 2 outside gray wires are the turn signal lights.

Re: Dash lights/Indicator lights

I removed the instrument cluster. There is no bulb/socket in the left turn signal spot. The bulb/socket that is in the right turn signal spot has a single wire that looks original, and it runs all the way down to the fuse panel next to the panel lights fuse. Is it possible that this truck did not come with turn signals, therefore they just put another panel light in where the turn signal indicator would be on the right side?

I would say No. What color is the wire that goes to that socket now? It should be a single blue & white wire. I looked at mine and redrew the diagram as the original was flipped over as I unplugged everything.

Re: Dash lights/Indicator lights

The single wire going to the right side indicator socket is gray in color. As stated earlier it does not go to any harness, just one single wire going down to the fuse panel.

That gray wire is one of the ones that light the whole cluster. See the above diagram.

Re: Dash lights/Indicator lights

There are no blue or blue w/white wires to any light sockets. I think I will have to run my own.

Re: Dash lights/Indicator lights

Has anyone upgraded their original dash lights with brighter ones, either using the existing sockets or new ones? Any suggestions?

Re: Dash lights/Indicator lights

The single grey wire running to your fuse box runs over and plugs into your heater control.

Re: Dash lights/Indicator lights

bhc41051, my single gray wire running to the fuse box is connected to a light socket that is in the turn signal illuminator in the instrument cluster.

Re: Dash lights/Indicator lights

Sorry, I wasn't too clear. The single grey wire with the light socket, goes from the fuse panel and plugs into the rear of the heater control. Lights up the heater control levers.

Re: Dash lights/Indicator lights

Thanks, I will have to take a look at the back of the heater control switch. I don't remember seeing an opening for a light socket.

Re: Dash lights/Indicator lights

Bhc41051, thank you for the schematic. I did not see a hole for the light socket near or in the heater controls. In addition, your schematic shows the wire going to an accessory fuse panel which I do not have. Who really knows, with a truck this old and so many previous owners, the wiring and mechanicals may have changed numerous times. I think at this point I will tap into my after market turn signal wiring and add my own turn signal indicators.

Thanks again
