Re: LS factory cruise control hook up

Hi casaba, digging in my mental archives i believe buick or caddy used a vacuum servo mounted off to the side of the engine and used a bead chain and a pulley to make the 90 degree turn from behind and to the side of the rear of the cylinder head. I think it was in the early 70's. I think i'm getting a little older. Good luck, brian fuller

That cruise control set up(factory) sounds just like what was on my 78 Silverado before I did the LS change over

Has anyone figured out how to make a cruise engaged light work?

a UPDATE!
I used a Dakota stalk and two relays (87 & 87a, 1 N. O. and 1 N. C.) and just like everyone told me it will work!!!
All is good works fine, now I just need to thread it into the column and make the splices final.

Thanks all for the info

My cruise on light works with my Dakota Digital gauge package. I have a 5.3L and the wiring harness included a wire for that purpose.

You can use the Grey wire to trigger the Cruise light in the DD gauges. The light requires a ground to trigger it, so you will have to connect the grey wire to a relay in order to accomplish this. So when you turn the cruise to "on", the DD light will come on.

Re: LS factory cruise control hook up

I looked into the cruise engaged light at one time, but it's kind of involved, and since I didn't have a place for the lights I never tried it. If you just want an "on" indicator, you can just tap off the on/off switch. If you want a "cruise engaged" light it takes some work. Here's a diagram I drew up that shows how to do it, but I have never tested it in the real world. However, if I remember my high school electricity class correctly, this should work. One note though, it will set the "engaged" light if the Resume button is pressed before the Set button, but of course the cruise wont be set. If you try it, post back and let me know how it does.

Re: LS factory cruise control hook up

Thanks for the diagram I will give it a try and report back. I am using a 99-2005 S-10 module with a Rostra stick and M&R closed to open circuit adaptor.
I added cruise to a GM diesel and never had an indicator light on that either.
Do you know what type of signal is given to the PCM from the J terminal ?

Yeah, let me know if it works for you. As for J, it's the "cruise engaged" signal to the PCM. I have it hooked up on my truck and it does nothing without the factory instrument cluster. The PCM sends a signal to the IPC to illuminate the cruise light and it also works with the shift indicator so if you put it in neutral when the cruise is on, it will shut it off. I don't know what would happen if you tried to hook up a light directly to it, if you want to try that, also let me know what happens.

Re: LS factory cruise control hook up

Heres a picture of what I did on mine . I wired it to work along side of the cruise control . It is not wired in to the pcm . The light is energized when I hit cruise . So when the cruise is set the light will come on . Also when I hit the brake it is disengaged . It has worked like clock work . If you did not know how it was wired you would never know the difference . I wired it to engage a relay when you hit cruise . I use the same power supply from the set button to energize both . It has never hiccuped .

So how is it wired? What wire did you hook it to?

Re: LS factory cruise control hook up

OK, so curiosity got the best of me. I took my truck and unhooked the J wire, and put another in it's place, then ran the wire into the cab and did some road testing with the multimeter. Turns out that the J (cruise engaged) wire puts out a ground when the cruise is set. So I came back to the house and rigged up a light and it works PERFECTLY! You can't make it come on until you've reached the speed that the cruise will set, then it comes on and goes off when the brakes are applied, comes back on when resume is pushed, and goes off when you have it set, but push the coast button, and when you release the coast, it comes back on. I don't see any problems with wiring it this way. Just hook one side of the light to an ignition switched power source, the other side of the light to the J terminal and you're good to go! Guess you can $h!tcan that old diagram I drew up!!

There is 4 wires coming from the lever to control the cruise . One is a 12v momentary . I used this to activate the relays for the light . Then I hooked it to the brake switch to deactivate it when depressed . I got most of my info from a site at 12volt.com .

Once activated by the relay on the left, the relay's coil on the right will stay energized until either ground or 12v(+) is removed.

Momentary to Constant 12v(+) Output Relay Diagram

I just noticed I copied the wrong wiring diagram . The post above is for a negative trigger . What is needed is a positive trigger .

Here's the diagram for the positive trigger .

I have not tried this, but with a couple of diodes and a relay, it should work. Maybe lol!!

Re: LS factory cruise control hook up

[QUOTE=ls1nova71;6992688]What are you trying to do

I was showing a way to get a ground signal to the DD guages when you actually set the cruise, not just turning cc on/off.
Most if not all of the vehicles I owned , only had the cruise icon when it was actually set not when it was turned on or off.
DD makes it a little harder to do when it's just a ground signal.
Like I said earlier I have not verified it, but I'm sure it will work.

Re: LS factory cruise control hook up

Apparently no one saw post 163 where I showed how to do it with the J wire. It goes to ground when the cruise is set. Just add a power and the module operates the ground. Works perfectly.

Sorry man, not trying to step on any toes here.
I did go back and read post 163, where is this j wire? I'm running DBW, if I have this, it would be a lot simpler to wire up. Thanks

I saw it! That is how I am planning to do mine when I get to that point. I need to find a tilt column first after I get the thing running...

Re: LS factory cruise control hook up

Before I found this thread I hooked the J terminal up to a light hoping it was powered and of course it did not work. Now all I have to do is switch a couple of wires around and I will be good to go. Will have to wait road test a couple of months down the road.
I hadn't been on this site since 2006 and had to search for my user name by zip code and remembered the password and I was back on.
Thanks

I came across these while searching for a cruise lever. Looks like they're already a 4 wire setup. Any reason why they wouldn't work?

They will work, but you will have to wire in relays to switch the normally closed switches in them to normally open.
