Need bearing advice
My project just keeps going.....starting with a front end rebuild has now sprouted into wheel bearings.
I have a C20 1969 with a 5.7L. My preference is Timken bearings but have been striking out on finding stock for the inner bearing and race. What are your opinions on other brands like National, SKF and AST? Any suggestions on sources? |

I would just take the old bearings with you down to O'reilly's and they can put their caliper on it and find out the I.D and O.D and go get some made in the usa bearings off the shelf, or if they don't have them in stock they can order them and usually get them in the same day as long as you order first thing in the morning.

The National Bearings are fine for most people. I too prefer Timken over National and the others but at the end of the day I will use National. Its cost effective and conical bearings rarely just randomly give it up without some kind tell tale grindey/crunchy sounds before they die(IMO). The National parts are off the shelf stuff, A-3s for the outer and 2777s for the inners. Should be able to get them any where.

Just FYI, never spin up a roller bearing in your hand with compressed air. Local guy lost some fingers not that long ago.

How funny you mention the warning about spinning a dry bearing with compressed air. I just read an article from Timken about the dangers of a bearing coming apart under that same scenario.

i always thought that the NAPA premium brand bearings where re-boxed timkens????
and Auto zone carries timkens I think you need the set 3 and set 4
