TH400 to NV4500.........I got a few ???
I want to say first that I have read through several swap threads and couldnt decide which way might be the easiest to accomplish this swap with my current drivetrain.
My setup 88 V30 CC 454 TH400 NP205. My TH400 is about to bite the dust and the gift of overdrive would be awesome in my opinion I located a 94 model NV4500 from a K2500 4x4. I believe it should mate up to my np205 because both should be 32 spline units if I am not mistaken. (correct me if I'm wrong) My biggest questions are..... 1. If the NV4500 will mate to my 205 without any adapters or spacers will the combo of the nv4500/205 be longer than the TH400/205 combo? 2. Will I have the option to run hydraulic or mechanical clutch linkage? The reason I ask is because I'm sure the mechanical linkage would be cheaper if I can use that 3. What bell housing will I need? Am I required to buy a special made bell housing to go from the 454 to the nv4500? Or can I find and use a factory bell housing from salvage? 4. What years of trucks should I be looking in for a set of pedals? I may have access to a set of pedals but I believe the truck is a early 80's model. 5. Will my Auto transmission hump be high enough to clear the NV4500? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: TH400 to NV4500.........I got a few ???
I'm working on a 4 speed and NP208 (~85 vintage) to to NV4500 NP205 swap in my 72 K10. I'm no expert... I bought and parted an 89 suburban to get the round 205 and lots of parts.
1. The 32 spline input on your 205 is (if I understand correctly) the long version and to use it you need a spacer about 1.75" long. 73-77 TH400 trucks used the short input. They are ~$150 on ebay. My AA BH is 6 5/8" and the trans is 20 5/8" mating surface to mating surface. Even with the short input you may need to cut the ouptut of the 4500 by ~.25". 2. The factory early BH is hydraulic with the actuation on the passenger side I think, and the unsynced granny low, as well as a GM trans side bolt pattern. To me, the 1st ratio is not so good. On the other hand, the bolt pattern means you should be able to get a GM mechanical truck BH and go mechanical, or late 80s or so hydraulic. 3. See 2. 4. No idea, but I'd guess the same generation you have. 5. No idea. |

Is DirtyLarry out there? I know he could answer my questions.
I would also welcome input from anyone else who might know? Another question I had was? Would a lift kit allow me enough clearance between the front driveshaft and external slave cylinder so I could use a cheaper factory bell housing?
