C30 Rear shock Question!!
Where rear shocks on the C30 duallies an option or did they come stock? The leaf springs on these trucks are so heavy I don't think a shock is going to make a lot of difference and my truck does not have rear shocks or upper shock mounts. The mounts are on the axle but not the frame. Nothing on the glove box option sheet says anything about rear shocks, but I have seen it mentioned on C20 and K20 sheets but even the ones that don't mention it seem to have rear shocks. If this is only an option where would I find that info to show to the inspection mechanic so he does not fail me becouse I have no rear shocks which are now mandatory? If this is standard equipment does anyone out there have a pair of upper shock mounts for a C-30 that they would be willing to sell me?
Thanks for any help!! |

One ton rear shocks.
I have looked at a bunch of ton trucks (67-72) and I have yet to see one with rear shocks. But, If I remeber right, the all had the mounting plate on the frame. Good luck and I hope this helps and BS inspections SUCK!

my one ton says nothing about shocks on the option sheet, but it does have them on there.
While I have not looked at other one tons, the 3/4 ton and 1/2 ton shocks that would be listed would be optional (as in H.D.) shocks. |

Just looked in the restoration book...the front shocks are listed as standard, but there are no listings for rear standard shocks on a cab/chassis truck.

my K/2500 has shocks (or the remnants of said shocks) on all 4 corners. they are the period correct "pretzel twist" style. they are all completely rusted through, however.
i have HD front and rear springs listed as an option, but nothing about shocks.

Yes, mostly, and I don't know.
The switch on the column is considered a replacement part, but it is not correct though. There are still some wires under the dash that go to the cruise controll that are burnt....but i'll deal with all that stuff later. |

My ton truck has no shocks either,it has the brackets on the rearend for shocks, but it only has a hole for a bracket or a stud on the frame,do the rear shocks on a ton truck have a bracket on the frame or do they attach to a stud on the frame like the front shocks do?

So from the looks of things rear shocks are not standard on the C-30 dually trucks! Now I just have to find it in print for my inspection mechanic. Any Ideas on where I can find some thing that says, "Rear shocks where not installed on all 67-72 one ton trucks with dual rear wheels!", or something simular from a trusted source like GM? Could I write thier service department to get that answer?

I have a related stroy whose out come could be your solution. GM trucks did not have switches on the emergency brake pedal until 71, an inspector failed my truck because the brake idiot light did not come on when the e-brake was engaged. I called the state police inspectors and explained to them that I can't even purchase the switch because at autozone/advanced auto it is not listed (i.e. no p/n until 71). And they called the inspection shop and let them know it was ok. This from a member in one commonwealth to other.

You tried going to another inspection station? If it has been on the road for 30 + years, you'd think someone knows there crap.

You would think someone would know their crap, but you get alot of these young kids at these garages that are looking under the hood and dash of my truck trying to figure out where the damn computer plugs in. I found a solution though. I'm paying for my brother to get his state inspection license again. Where he works he does not need it so he let it lapse. I'll pay for him to get it and then he inspects my truck for free!!!

Sounds like a plan.
Maybe he could specialize in older/obscure vehicles and keep this from happening to 'the next guy'. Not that there is any money in it for him. They only make a couple bucks per vehicle don't they? |

Rear shock
So, I've been hunting for upper mounts for a month and I don't even need them. Thought it was kind of funny that I've got 3 Eaton 1 ton rears and none of them had shock mounts on them. The axle on the truck the PO welded on some mounts. Now if I could only find the air cleaner for a 292 with PB.
