How mad should I be, if at all?
Bought a 72K20 on eBay. Due to schedule I picked it up in the dark one morning and didn't check it. My fault. Description from seller was 350 with the th400 with np205 case. Just changed/flushed all the fluids. Turns out it is a th350. Not sure on what case it is (lost power in shop before I got to it). What would have come from the factory, 350 or 400? So should I be pissed or not? It would be about 1600 miles for me to put foot to ass.

Re: How mad should I be, if at all?
Th350 was factory and I would be mad because he advertised an upgrade that's not there

I would be mad, not that it would achieve anything. Congratulations on the new truck, post some pictures!

Same thing happened with a '71 K10 I bought. Didn't really bother me too much. Figured it was probably an honest mistake.

Re: How mad should I be, if at all?
I'd be mad, too. I've been burned a few times, so I'm very cautious about buying something sight unseen. Hopefully, the Ebay seller has a good feedback rating and will want to work with you by giving you some $s back rather than getting a negative review on the transaction.

Re: How mad should I be, if at all?
Disappointed? Yes. Mad? No. It could have been either from the factory if 4WD was the same as 2WD. Same option code on the SPID too. Ask yourself: "Would I have bought the truck if he'd said it had a 350"?
See if he'll refund a couple hundred. |

Re: How mad should I be, if at all?
Could be that was what the seller was told when they bought it. If they did/do not know what the differences are, they would/could never have known.

Re: How mad should I be, if at all?
I'd be mad as heck! *Just because it was an automatic. Manuals are way more fun.
Unless I had a strong reason to believe the seller lied, I'd let it go and chalk it up to experience. |

Re: How mad should I be, if at all?
If you bought a truck sight unseen from 1600 miles away from ebay I would be stoked that was the only thing wrong... Seller probably couldn't tell a 350 from a 400.

Re: How mad should I be, if at all?
Look at it this way, a turbo 400 weighs more and "uses up" more horses than the 350. As far as strength, Livrat has been running a turbo 350 behind a big block in his 4x4 for many years and miles.

Re: How mad should I be, if at all?
I wouldn't be mad unless the motor is very powerful. I don't consider a TH400 an upgrade unless you are pushing more power than a TH350 will handle.

Re: How mad should I be, if at all?
I guess I would Identify the t-case before I contacted Ebay. If you have a NP203 then I would be PISS--. Trick is how much are those "downgrades" worth? Th400/2NP205 combos are tough as heck. But then My 700R4 isn't supposed to be very strong but it's been behind my 406ci for close to 14 years now.
Open a case with Ebay anyway. If he did not know what he was selling he should not have been selling it. You have been misinformed and the product does not match the description-period. I do consider the TH400 an upgrade. Try to find one with a NP205 attached and see what it's worth. Go from there for refunds.

Re: How mad should I be, if at all?
If he had just flushed/changed the fluids, he surely changed the filter too- which would have told him he has a th350- right? Guess if he had a shop do it he wouldn't know

Re: How mad should I be, if at all?
Buying sight unseen is a well known no-no that people seem to not worry about these days buying off of Ebay. They also always say "buyer beware". If you didn't get a good look you should have at least gone with more knowledge. Since you didn't already know, you could have used this site to find out real quick that these trucks never came with a TH400 in a 4wd. Then you would have know to ask about the "swap". Then you would have had inaccurate info given and have a bonafide complaint. You got a '72 K/20 built just like all the others. I've been driving K/20s with TH350s for decades and never had a single issue. I see no need for a TH400 in a K/20, other than bragging rights. And what bragging rights will you have, unless you are putting out far more extra HP than the 18 the TH400 is stealing? The TH350 has been doing what's been asked of it in these trucks for over 40 years and the trucks didn't get the great reputation they hve from being built anything less than great

Re: How mad should I be, if at all?
I don't know how you could be mad. Most average people could not tell the differance in the two. But it boils down to who did not check before handing over the cash? Who was in charge of checking? Good experience for you. Think what else you could have been missed due to pickup in the dark. I think you are pretty lucky.Welcome to the Forum and show some pictures, best if pics were taken in daylight. In the meantime enjoy your new truck.

Re: How mad should I be, if at all?
Naw don't be mad. Just be big and take your licks. Ive rebuilt dozens of automatic transmissions. And the difference between a turbo 350 & turbo 400 isn't worth squaking about. You can burn one up just as easy as the other. If you change the filter on a auto trans and its dirty. You need to just pull it out and put a kit in it. The only thing that will make the fluid dirty is material from the clutches or the band.

Re: How mad should I be, if at all?
I have a hard enough time as it is buying anything electrical, electronic, or mechanical off of some online store, unless it has a stated warranty or guarantee. With that being said, I can't see a good reason for me to buy a vehicle online unless it was loaded with pics, a bonus would be a video of the vehicle running. Contact the seller and see if he is willing to work something out with you. Chances are, it's just a case of misinformation on his part.

Re: How mad should I be, if at all?
To add, I've burned up a TH400 behind a mildly built 327 in a '68 C10 (my current truck), as where I've abused a TH350 behind a 454 BB in a 1984 Suburban 4WD.

Welcome to the board from a fellow Iowan.... I guess it would depend if you wanted the hassle of filing a claim with E-bay. I would send him a message through E-bay to see if he will reimburse you some $ on it though. I think you have 45 days to file a claim on it. LockDoc
