Picture request: rear bumper mounting
Apologizes if I asked this before, but the thread didn't come up in a search and I can't remember if I actually asked it.
I'm getting ready to put the bed on my '65 K10 short step. I also have a rear bumper, fresh from powder coat, and a pile of brackets from a couple different trucks. Can someone snap a picture or two of their rear bumper and how it is installed so I can figure this thing out? Thanks. |

Re: Picture request: rear bumper mounting
Check out post 13 in this thread. I asked the same question awhile back.

Re: Picture request: rear bumper mounting
Using the pictures in that post, I took a crack at mounting my rear bumper today. Here is the result:
Obviously the fenders missing makes things look a bit odd, but it seems like the bumper is back a bit and down a bit. Down I can probably fix with good ol' brute force, but forward seems to be a bit more problematic. The thing is, in the picture in the post linked above, the bracket extends forward of the rear most cross member. On my K10, that would put that front bolt right smack in the middle of the rear spring perch. Are there different brackets for 4WD? This bumper and brackets came from the same '63 C10 I got the bed from. |

Re: Picture request: rear bumper mounting
Still learning a lot on the 60-66 trucks, but on the 67-72 trucks the brackets were different for the 4wd.
It almost looks like you got the brackets on the wrong side (driver on passenger & vice versa). That should angle the bumper up and possibly closer. I cannot tell from your photo, but is you longer bracket on the inside of the rail or the outside? The longer bracket goes to the inside of the frame rail. from what I can gather in the other thread, which should all it to clear the spring mount.

Re: Picture request: rear bumper mounting
That's a fleetside bumper Jimal, I can't find any documentation to show GM ever offered the "sport" rear bumpers on the short wheelbase K models.

Re: Picture request: rear bumper mounting
Well that would explain why it looks the way it does, and why I could find plenty of pictures of C10s with this type of bumper but no K10s. Did they offer any sort of rear bumper on the K steps? I ask because I want to convert my rear mounted tank to fill from behind the license plate, and I'd like to have something back there to protect the filler.

Re: Picture request: rear bumper mounting
I know a few folks use the sport bumper from the 67-72 on the fleetsides. I would imagine the stepside sport bumper would work the same way.
This is my 64 EDIT....BTW...LMC does show a sport looking bumper for the stepsides. Like Jimal I don't think I have ever seen one...especially on a 4x4. http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cbe/full.aspx?Page=15

Re: Picture request: rear bumper mounting
I'm on Page 18 of 24 of the 60-66 pic thread in the 4x4 forum and I'm seeing plenty of short step K's with sport bumpers. While I'm sure I could fabricate brackets, finding something that doesn't require the backyard engineering would be preferred.
