Another trans question

Wife and I gave our 16 yearold son a 1962 c10 3 on the tree. It was an original I6. We have removed the 6 and put in a 78 350. Looking to put in a 5 speed or 6 speed. Yesterday while stumbling around junkyard we found a 1994 firebird with a 6 speed.
would there be a bunch of mods to putthat transmission in or is it even possible? Wehave a 4 speed to put in.

Re: Another trans question

I'm pretty sure that 1994 6 speed was bolted to a V8 and will have a FORD bolt pattern where it bolts to the bell. I'm fairly certain that it could be made to work.

However, it might require any 1 or more of the following changes.
1. using an adapter plate to make the 6 speed bolt to a Chevy bell
2. finding a Chevy V8 bell with a FORD bolt pattern for the transmission
3. adapting to a hydraulic clutch
4. using a different starter and flywheel
5. I probably forgot something.

A 1962 C10 has a passenger side clutch fork and hydraulic clutch system IIRC. That setup might have to be exchanged for something compatible with the 6 speed.

Look and see if the bell housing that comes with that 6 speed has a SBC V8 pattern.

I know that certain Chevy 4.3 engines have a FORD pattern for the tranny and certain Chevy 305ci (1993 and up) have a Chevy V8 pattern where they bolt to the engine and a FORD pattern where they bolt to the tranny. Here are photos from my files.

Re: Another trans question

One more thing to consider. The Firebird and Camaro transmission shifters will come through the cab floor UNDER the bench seat. So that means you'd have to switch to bucket seats and be satisfied with the shifter handle next to your thigh instead of right at the bend of your knee.

Re: Another trans question

There is a fairly recent thread in the Engine and Drivetrain section about bolting a T56 up to a Gen I small block.

Here's the thread I was thinking of.

There are other threads as well.

Re: Another trans question

Thanks guys. I will do some more reading. My wife and I were going to do this truck for us. Then started looking at pickups and decided would rather fix this up as a daily driver for our son. Then two weeks after starting on it I found a 59 gmc that just needs paint and chrome put on. So now doing two projects.
