LS Swappers Cam Choices

What are the fellow LS swappers using for camshafts?
Curious what other people with heavy(er) vehicles are using. Post up your set-ups with gearing trans and approximate weight. Even if its not a chevy truck with an ls swap, feel free to post.

Just picked up my donor 4.8 5spd. truck. Thanks!

Re: LS Swappers Cam Choices

I have a LQ4/4L80E that I swapped over some CNC ported 243 heads. Cam is 228/232-112LSA, .626" lift. Heads and cam were from Advanced Inductions. Running a 4.10 with a posi. Mid summer it put down 368hp/360tq at the wheels on a Dyno Dynamics. You're going to have fun with that 4.8 5 speed!

5.3 with TS 228R cam. 228/228 .588 110 LSA. Sounds mean and makes good seat of the pants power with the 4.10 rear. I still get 16-17 mpg's with the cam and 3K stall. A 4.8 will sound even better with same came and no stall needed so thats a great money saver for you.

Re: LS Swappers Cam Choices

I'm trying the TS 225/230 - 112 in my LS3 this time around. Mild enough to daily drive and lumpy enough to know it's cammed. Should make good power too, hopefully around 450 to the wheels.

Re: LS Swappers Cam Choices

What heads are you pairing with this cam.

I'm very early in the build of a 6.0L
trying to get close to 450-475hp with stock bottom end and cam and head swap.

Thinking a TS cam with 243 PP heads.

I'll be running the stock LS3 heads for now. If I ever upgrade I'll look at the trick flows. Ls3 is already good for 430 at the flywheel stock and a cam alone will really wake it up..

A 6.0L with your planned mods should be capable of 450ish I would think with right cam and right heads along with supporting mods.

My intention is to do a "cam only" with it. Basically cam, ls2 chain, ported oil pump, roller trunion upgrade on the rockers, pushrods and springs/retainers. My car should be around 4000lbs. with me and a tank of fuel in it (possibly lighter). Planning on 3.73's and a 26-28" tall tire. Trying to get ideas cam wise what works well with the small engine in a heavier car but still run hard. Its still 700lbs. or more lighter than the truck it came in though.

I like those vinci trucker cams. Modest lift.
I dont think a stock headed 4.8 is going to tolerate (or use) much more than .580" lift at 6500-7000rpm.

How is the bottom end with that cam, would love to hear a video too if you have one. Is this in your 67 stepper?

Re: LS Swappers Cam Choices

Reach out to Cam Motion, they build custom cams based on your build and the price is not far from the Comp or other brand of off the shelf cams. I have one in my 67 Cam LS motor and I just put one in my 4.8l that is going in the 68 C10. I don't have a dyno on either setup yet but you cannot beat getting a cam that is custom made for your setup. There is a video of someone that put one of their off the shelf cams in a stock 5.3l Silverado and just the cam added 40+ hp to the wheels. Can't beat those results.

The one in my 4.8l is:
200-295/205-295-15+4, with .501 lift

all I did was add on a set of the LS6 springs added new retainers and locks. I did replace the oil pump, water pump, and all seals while I had it open so that added to the cost.

Re: LS Swappers Cam Choices

Have you looked into the Crane cams direct fit LS series? Couple of options that are reasonably priced. According to their info you gain around 44hp and 37ft lbs. of torque. Got mine (1449541) for around $300 from Amazon ironically.....

IMO, That cam isn't very big, you might as well go with a z06 cam at that point.

Re: LS Swappers Cam Choices

Cam Motion built mine for me.Called them up and talked to them to see what they would suggest. The motor is a 2005 5.3 L33 with the 4l60e trans with headers.I wanted low end power and torque not really concerned with high rpm's cause this is in 69 4X4 with 35 inch tires and 4.11 gears.Still have a lot of work to do on it nowhere close to driving it,but I did have to crank it up so i could hear what it sounded like.I like it.
220/228
561 lift
lsa 112+4

Thats moving on motor or the hose for a cam only LS. Have any cam specs? I'd like to see your build thread on the mustang if you could provide a link.

Re: LS Swappers Cam Choices

I second Tick performance . I have been working on a cam profile from them and will be ordering soon .With a spec cam you will have a nice running motor with good power. Tell him what your looking for . Just trust what Martin at Tick performance says.

Also you are seeing people mention 6.0l motors with big power . Have you thrown the 4.8 out the window . The 4.8 will not be close to that power level. The 6.0 is a good choice to make big power easy .

Call Martin at tick or Ed Curtis at flow tech induction . They are some of the best in my opinion. My last truck had the street sweeper ht from Ed and I loved it .

Re: LS Swappers Cam Choices

The main question is stock converter or not !
I would call brian tooley racing. He speced mine, its a beast on bottom, and revs hard to 6200.
