first start starter wont stop.
Rebuild is 99% complete. Have a 350sb in my 55 3600. My problem is first time I turned the key the starter enagged and spun but would not stop until I disengaged the battery. I did use a AAW full kit and in assuming I wired it up wrong. I did bypass the neutral safety switch for now and just attached the purple solenoid wire from the fuse box to the neutral safety switch purple wire. Not sure if that matters. This is my first project and any help would be appreciated. She's so close to being back on the road again.

Re: first start starter wont stop.
Sounds like the bendix (part on nose of starter that engages the gear to the flywheel) is bad of solenoid is bad. Solenoid is energized from the purple wire, when the circuit closes it pushes the bendix out to engage the flywheel and starts the starter spinning. When the bendix hits the right rpm that tells it the engine is running it disengages and closes the solenoid circuit shuting off the started. Might be as simple as the starter being shimmed to close to the flywheel so the bendix binds and cannot return.

Re: first start starter wont stop.
Well In waiting for a post I checked to see if my wires were too loose and we're touching so I tightened the bolts on the starter. Attempted to read attach my battery cables then got a spark on the battery when I tapped it to the positive terminal. Weird how something so small can have me stumped I'll post a pic of my starter wired.

Re: first start starter wont stop.
If what OrrieG say's is the case then you'll need to shim the starter away from the block.
NAPA lists them and may have them in stock. Recheck your wiring and make sure the ignition bypass wire is connected to the I terminal on the solenoid and NOT the S terminal. Another thought is the Alternator feeding back via the idiot light circuit . Until the battery is disconnected the engine will continue to run. Sounds like you posted as I was making my post, so NEVER MIND

Re: first start starter wont stop.
What kind of starter is that?
I don't ever remember seeing any that had the solenoid cockeyed on the starter like that. Usually the two big posts are vertically lined up with the center line of the starter. It looks like an aftermarket mini starter and 95 % of the posts you see on those all over the net are about guys having trouble with them working as planned or expected.

Re: first start starter wont stop.
It is one of those short starters. And looked at her underneath and I realized how slow I am. The starter gear was still engaged which means you're all right. Going to get shims now. You guys rock

Re: first start starter wont stop.
There's something wrong there. You can see the mounting bolt where the solenoid ear should be, if I'm not mistaken. What is that shard of metal hanging on the other large terminal? looks almost like the solenoid was twisted without removing the connection to the starter motor. Was that new starter purchased with the solenoid attached?

Re: first start starter wont stop.
I had to hunt down photos yesterday but those things seem to have a strap running from that post to the starter rather than having the connection that we see on regular Delco starters.
Looking at this one in the add on Jegs site http://www.jegs.com/i/Powermaster/71...a6EhoCAeXw_wcB That is what it appears to be. Click on the third photo from the left..

Re: first start starter wont stop.
In his photo the strap to the motor is on the right side (not insulated!) with power coming to the left, opposite of the link MR48 posted. Since it turns probably wired right, still hanging up.

Re: first start starter wont stop.
I looked at photos of several of that style of starter and there doesn't seem to be a real continuity between the different brands as far as the clocking of the solenoid.
My question has always been that unless he is facing a tight space situation or has compression high enough to need the gear reduction why would a person want one of the little aftermarket ones at their cost when a regular heavy Delco starter is a proven entity that gives very little trouble.

This leaves more room around them for cooling & headers . They draw less amps so you can use a smaller lighter battery also.

Re: first start starter wont stop.
It helps that O'Reilly's has a lifetime warranty on my Vette-style starter.
Man, that thing spins the 'ol 350!

Re: first start starter wont stop.
GM uses these small gear reduction starters in all newer applications. They were standard issue on the late model 350 & 454 engines about 1996.They draw less power, crank faster, give more clearance for tight spaces and you can hold one in the palm of your hand when installing.I have used lots of these to update the old style with no problems at all.
