79 K5 Starter Wiring

So my Blazer has been sitting for awhile now because I can't get it to start. The key does absolutely nothing (like it has no battery) ever since I bought a new starter and took the old one out. Obviously the starter is good and the battery is also good. So it must be a wiring issue. I'd greatly appreciate a picture of someone's 79 starter all wired up. I've searched diagrams but my truck seems unique, maybe the diagrams weren't 1979 specific? If you could find the right diagram or tell me how it's supposed to be that would be great!

Re: 79 K5 Starter Wiring

I'm guessing mine's not stock then.. I have a wire on the "S" terminal like the picture only it's black. As for the main post I have the battery cable and a thin black wire connected to it. The battery cable goes straight from the battery to the starter so nothing's getting power except the starter.. What am I missing?

Try this link: http://www.chuckschevytruckpages.com...oodwiring.html

Good diagrams there of how it should be wired.

Re: 79 K5 Starter Wiring

Put the truck in neutral and try again. If its a manual trans, push the clutch in.
Measure the voltage to ground at the S-terminal with the key in the start position.

Re: 79 K5 Starter Wiring

SteezyK5,

Working in a dealership I have learned a couple times that just because a part is new that doesn't mean that it works, I would test it.

I know that you didn't say this but just in case. If this is a newly rebuilt motor and freshly painted make sure there is no paint where the starter mounts, this is the ground path.

The large terminal should have your battery positive cable, an ignition feed, and a power supply to the fuse box.

The "S" terminal should have the wire that come from the ignition feed/neutral safety switch.

There is a metal strap or wire that goes between the bottom of the solenoid and the starter, make sure it is connected.

Definitely check the new parts. Battery, sometimes they sit on a shelf a long time which allows them to discharge. Starter, who knows who put it together. Figure that they build 100's of 1000's of these things, not all will be perfect.

Hope this helps.

Re: 79 K5 Starter Wiring

Thank you all for the replies. So it sounds like I have the battery cable and "S" terminal correct. As for the ignition feed to the main post is that the thin black wire I mentioned? If so, I have that right too. Now the power supply is what I think I'm missing because my truck isn't getting any electrical power. No lights or anything like that. When I pulled the original starter out it had a short red wire about the same thickness of the battery cable. Is this it? It was connected to the main post but the other end was bare wire. I guess it came loose when the starter got pulled. Right now I have it connected to the main post at one end but does anyone know where the bare end goes?
