Fuel filters with return style fuel rail

I'm sure this has been covered, and I have searched, but maybe I'm not searching the right words. Majority of what I'm finding is for the return less type rail. I'm Installing a 02 5.3 into my 71 swb. Using the dorman fittings with nylon lines, also using a walbro external pump, stock fuel tank with return line added. My question is what fuel filters are you all using , both pre pump and post pump. What micron, brand, best bang for the buck and so on. Again I'm not using an fittings so im not looking for fancy billit canisters. Just want to make sure I get it all filtered out. Some people say to use a pre pump and some say not to because it will cause to much strain on pump. What's everyone's thoughts and recommendations? Thank you for any input.

Re: Fuel filters with return style fuel rail

I don't run a prefilter unless I'm running an in-tank sock filter. Most of them create too much additional restriction, and its only made worse as they clog (Since most people don't service fuel filters, especially if their not using replaceable-element filters).

You can use the "regular" fuel filter for the donor truck, so something like an 03 tahoe. There isn't a micron or flow rating on those, there just stock replacement parts. If your not running AN-type fuel systems, there aren't many "performance" options. Your swap doesn't sound like you'll be using or require insane fuel rates, so you really don't need to spend the extra cash.

Once you start needing way more fuel, that pretty much all has to change, as their aren't many high-flow-high-pressure parts available with hose barbs (most of what you'll see on Jegs etc is designed for 8-15psi).

Since then GM has changed them all to returnless, so its not like a lot of "new" stuff will be coming out.

Re: Fuel filters with return style fuel rail

Thank you! Just had a "duh" moment. You cleared it up for me. I was looking for some performance filter. Didn't think of just using stock. Reading all the post in the ls swaps can get overwhelming for the first time swapper.
