Black widow spider

I think there is a black widow spider living under my truck in or around my rear cab mount. The Truck is parked outside. How would you all recamend trying to get rid of it?

Sounds like a perfect job for brake cleaner. Decent range, highly toxic to spiders, etc.

Not as fun as fire, but then again you won't burn your truck down either.

I had a lot of spiders under my truck. I bought four bug bombs and placed them under my truck and sprayed about three cans total of bug spray that had spiders listed in every nook and cranny I could find. After this I've had a small spider web here and there, but nothing more.

Now is the time to send the truck out for disassembly and sand blasting.

I guess leaving it out in freezing weather is not an option?

Put a charger on the battery. Leave the radio on a rap station all night. They'll leave.

Black widows are very common where I live. They have that tell tale sticky strong web that says, "Don't put your hand in here" Truth is they are rather docile creatures. They hide in the day and come out on their webs at night. That's when I squish 'em. I go out at night, flip on the lights and get to squishin'. They don't jump but they are fast on their webs. A lot of garage chemicals won't kill them very quickly either, and they can escape before you can confirm the kill. I say track her down and smash her with some needle nosed pliers or a paint stick.

Wait till a bit after dark, and start squishing. I killed at least 30-40 that lived in my panel truck.

easiest method:

strike a road flare

put it in the seat

wait 4 hours


seriously though acampodave is right, black widows are not aggressive and there hasnt been a death associated with one in decades. Black widows are one of the only spiders I do kill on sight though, even brown recluse spiders are more benefit than harm. Black widows will bite when provoked but it will likely not inject enough venom (most defensive bites are venomless) to give you more than a fever.

I know thats small comfort if you have arachnophobia but I teach my kids catch and release. My oldest brought me a whole jar of bees one day, they werent mad just wondering why they were in a jar.

Brown widows suck too. My daughter got bit on the arm and ended up in the ER with a 105 degree fever.

Must be a California thing because Black Widows LOVE my truck! I don't care if I park in the driveway, or on the street they will find it. For some reason they don't mess with the wife's van.
As mentioned they have strong webs. They have of way of "catching" leaves ,and other small items. I have a stick that I keep in the bed that I use to remove the webs. I twirl the stick to remove the webs.
To get rid of them I use brake cleaner, and smash them when they drop and yes the best time is at nighttime.

Black widows? Brown recluse? one of the reasons I live in Wisconsin----we just worry about snow snakes----pure white like snow and very poisonous

My wife got bit by a black widow at work in the mid 90's. She fell through a small glass table, no cuts luckily, and slept for 3 days, with the fever.

Hey neighbor, you never saw them before? They appear on any vehicle that stays parked for awhile. Good thing is they don't like to share. Experience tells me they are solitary by nature, so you won't find bunches of them under one car. Maybe one under the front and one in back at the most.
Stupid or not, the old flame-thrower in a can approach is way effective. Brake cleaner with a straw tube and wand lighter has done the trick for me for many years, and I've yet to set anything I didn't want to on fire. Ya gotta do a little thinking first though.

I get 'em in my garage a lot. touch the web with a straw or something light, and it'll likely come out to see what it just caught. Smash it.

I use permethrin on anything that crawls, kills then but is safe for pets. I spray the crazy ants with it and the chickens follow me around eating them, they think its some kind of an ant sauce
