differences in a 58-59 apache 31?

Sorry if this has been covered. Search is down and Bing didn't turn anything up. The same family friend that is giving me my truck also has an apache that I can buy for cheap. What's the difference between a 58 and 59? Its a v8 stepside with clearance lights and 6lug wheels. Could be a damn cool truck once the corners, rockers, doors, eyebrows, and fender bottoms are taken care of thanks guys.

hood emblem changed to a bowtie and a V

the side emblems were moved to the fender crease above the front fender and now show Chevrolet Apache 31

larger drum brakes were used

Re: differences in a 58-59 apache 31?

here something else to check

Known Trouble Spots 55-59 1/2 ton to check extra close

Passenger side floor and toe board, from where the battery leaks for years.
Above the windshield inside and out.
Around the rear window inside and out
Above the doors at the roof line
Inner cowl by the vents
Upper firewall where the inner cowl and outer cowl meet.
fender dog leg bottoms
headlight eyebrows
option, mounts over mirror. check the bed wood sills at front panel and tailgate. on stepsides area where fender bolts to bed. on fleetsides the wheel openings.
Cab corners behind seat/under gas tank
it's absolutely critical to check for rust out where the top of the windshield meets the overhang of the roof
hinge pockets , and cab corners
Door bottoms, cab floors, inner fenders, headlight buckets

Oh its rusty for sure but I think it can be saved. Was just curious as to how to tell the years apart. Tinyjaime, are those to distinguish it as a 59? Or just for sure its 58/9.

vin is stamped on the top frame rail just in front of the steering box and top frame rail under the driver side step (secret hard to read) 4th digit will be an 8 or 9 depending on year (3A59B10001. 3A is 3100 series, 59 year, B production plan rest sequential vin number starting with 10001.

Re: differences in a 58-59 apache 31?

Just curious: You have a '58 and he's offering you this '59 as well? Do you plan to cannibalize it for your '58, or is it a second project? If it's another project wht are you plans for it.

PS: Just because we're all nosy here, what's the price on this good deal? It looks pretty solid to me.

Re: differences in a 58-59 apache 31?

Nah. The truck he's giving me is the blue truck in pieces, and the yellow 70 in the background. Price is 500. He's like an uncle. It'd be a second project. Plans would be tear it apart, lower it on black steelies with wide whites, truck painted black with a black leather bench seat. I'd keep the clearance lights and throw a big block in it. If I buy it that is. Its fairly complete with either 283 or a 327 in it now. Got some weird bucket seats in it.

Everything i wrote was for the 1959. That's how you can tell them apart.

Re: differences in a 58-59 apache 31?

Its a pretty cool 30-footer. Lol. The bottoms of the fenders, doors, corners are gone. Didn't look at the windshield area, I just did a quick walk around and took a couple pics.

Re: differences in a 58-59 apache 31?

I think I'm gonna go ahead and buy it if it has a title. Fix the rot and set it aside while I do the 68. Either that or throw a small block in it and make it drivable. Idk. I just hate seein these old trucks stuck in the mud. Literally.

There's some good trim parts on that truck, not sure about the rusted sheet metal tho...

What is the truck parked behind the '59?

1953 ford 9ft express bed. Flathead. I like it but can't afford all of em lol. He likes that one and I think he'll actually build it one of these days. I really want the black 55ish one by my new yellow 70. Could do so much with those trucks.

Re: differences in a 58-59 apache 31?

Saw a thing on iFunny one day that basically said: Young people have the time and energy but no money, middle aged people have money and energy but no time, then seniors have tome and money but no energy. I fall into the first :/ I'm really fortunate to have a dad that does paint and bodywork for a street rod shop. And general all around knowledge. I've learned a ton over the years but I got a long way to go to catch up to him. I'm relying alot on him for the paint and body but everything else I'm confident with. Anyways. Night. School :/

Well the 67 is nearing completion. It runs and drives, its two different colors but Dads waitin till spring to put quarters in and paint it. So that's done for now, cougar is down the road, after I'm out of tech school. The 68 is basically gonna be a business card, or a rolling resume if you will. Black on black, 5/7 drop, 6.0, undecided between 20s or black 15" rallys with police caps, custom console, shaved marker lights, stake pockets, taillight fill, 67 front end, 3.73 posi, painted frame, front and rear discs, just a clean little truck. Hopefully gonna be a daily driver April to November. Gonna be a few different colors for awhile.

I learned a new one tonight. The intake manifold on the 235's also changed to a lower profile in 1959 to accommodate the lower hood clearance on the chevy cars in '59. The I6 trucks ran the same manifold. I wondered why I have different ones in my parts depot.
