tailgate hinge bushings ? where do you find quality...
...Replacements. Just bought a cheesey kit from NAPA for 15 bucks and the pieces will not fit, its junk. My tail gate rattles around big time due to the lower hinge bushings either missing or worn out.
Where are y'all finding these? Thanks |

Junkyards have lots of them. You can inspect them prior to purchase to make sure that they are in good shape. Ebay is another choice. Most likely you got Chinese aftermarket parts from NAPA, and that will be true for all new parts. Also, be aware that the design did change and not all 73-87s are interchangeable.

Mine is an 88 with the ob-long piece on the truck and some kind of bushing to accept it in the tailgate (on the slotted side where you lift up the gate to remove it).... Hope that makes sense

Stainless steel is more cathodic than carbon steel, cad-plate, and other steels. Which means if you bolt stainless steel to regular steel, the stainless steel won't rust, but it will accelerate the rusting of the steel it is electrically connected to.

Yes, and you also have to make sure the fasteners do not create the electrical connection.
This is why I chose powder-coated steel rather than stainless steel side bars for my vehicle. I didn't trust that I could guarantee the electrical isolation of the stainless steel ones, particularly where they would get wet so often from road spray. For interior items it is much easier.

Want a cheap fix that will outlast the truck?
Get a bit of 1.75" 1/8 wall tube. Weld that in place of your "fixed" side. Weld a piece of 1.5" pipe to the tailgate on the fixed side. Once everything is welded up slip a piece of radiator hose with a 1.5" id over the 1.5" tube using grease. On the other side you cut a slot in the 1.75 tube so you can slip the pipe in. Slide the one side in then drop in the other and attach your chains/straps. The rubber will be tough to get in at first. But after a while it will work down and be great. If the tailgate rattles in another 8 or so years just replace the hose. It is one of those fixes that no one will ever notice, can be done for $20, and around 2 hours of time.
