Re: partial frame VIN/Cab VIN don't match question

I thought california was the only place that worried about frame vin? why are you having to get it inspected? sounds fishy. my truck doesn't have the original frame. had to get a new one when I wrecked it. I don't see the issue. if the title matches the cab shouldn't be a problem. thats the actual vin tag. don't you have to pull the cab or bed to even see the frame vin? I'd tell them if they wanna see it they can take it apart.

If the rosette rivets are still there and you did this in a rust or other repair process I wouldn't even mention it to the government goon. No need to buy trouble.

yeah, the rivets were ground down by a PO, and I didn't want to take a chance with it, since i've been working on it 3 years, too much hard earned money

i don't think i'll have a problem, just didn't know the exact law regarding it being tampered with, we'll find out soon LOL

Wish we had that option here in NC. Any antique/ classics coming from out of state require a visual inspection of frame and cab vin #'s.

In state transfer is no issue

right... however my VIN tag has been removed before, and put back on with the rivets, but with nuts jammed on the back of them, and what looks like JB weld

waiting for the DMV inspector to call me to set a time to come check it all out

hard days work...

Re: partial frame VIN/Cab VIN don't match question

I hope hes more prudent than my inspector was. He stood me up the 1st two times we set appointments with no notification. After I made a call to the Euthaw DMV branch the 2nd time he no showed me I got a higher up that set the appointment and showed up himself. He was very knowledgeable and liked the old trucks. We probably talked for 45 min after his 5 min inspection.

I was just after title transfer from NC at the time, which is a little simpler than getting it registered for the road. They have to come back out to inspect to register it. He told me it didn't have to run, wasn't required to run, just had to have the appearance that it would and I'd go from a non-op title to operational.

This was with my newest 63.....which was just a frame, cab, partial front and partial rear end at the time.

Re: partial frame VIN/Cab VIN don't match question

I'm a salvage dealer in VA. I just picked up a 89 honda civic that was from NC. It had a new vin installed by NC DMV with matching title. It also has the original vin still on it. DMV may do that for you since to them you just have a pile of parts and not a complete truck.
Please let everyone know what happens because these title problems seem to come up a lot on older vehicles.

Re: partial frame VIN/Cab VIN don't match question

I was told here it's officers choice, for a traffic stop, could be searched/seized/ with what's in it on the side of the road , if there was something funny/defaced with the vin.

Building from parts you would need to get a new vin (500$) and that's once stuff clears.
Frame or body , newest makes the year.
Dam that's a lotta work, hope it works in your favour.

Re: partial frame VIN/Cab VIN don't match question

My buddy had a 76 K20 and put an 85 C10 cab on it in the mid 90's. Did his truck magically turn into an 85 with a higher book value? What about emissions? He was told to continue registering it as a 76. I'm sure every state is different.

Since the VIN tag has been tampered with, that is a red flag to them, as by the letter of the law it is illegal to do anything with the vin tag. They assume stolen first--everything that is on the vehicle.

I'd probably be suspicious they would suspect an engine in visual sight would also be on their radar if an engine is not bolted in the vehicle they are looking at. Unless you can produce receipts for the individual components you are SOL. Up here, if you are planning on a build that needs an inspection to that level you need to make sure that any parts you buy from a salvage yard have a receipt clearly indicating what you bought, and if at all possible the vin number of the vehicle it came from also on that receipt. ie: frame, engine, cab that have vin numbers associated with them. to prove legal ownership. You can't just say the engine came from your friend billy bob.

I don't know about NC, but if you want to do a fiberglass body conversion on your truck here, you are supposed to remove the entire dash panel (vin intact, no removing it) as you did, and install/attach it to the fiberglass body. That new body is now "your" truck as it appears on the title.

Your sticking issue is that your vin plate is no longer attached with factory rivets. Where did your vin plate come from? where did the dash panel come from? where did the cab come from? where did the frame come from? Like mentioned above, without receipts for these items you would be SOL up here.
If you are rebuilding a car with a salvage title all the parts you get to rebuild, even the non-vin'd ones they prefer a salvage yard receipt with the vin of the donor vehicle listed on it.
When it gets to the level iii inspection here they want everything documented (they even want full photos of the vehicle BEFORE you begin repairs, and then after repairs. Worst of all, they want to do a inspection before you apply any paint to your repaired area, any paint/coating is technically a fail).

Hopefully age of the vehicle, and what they want from you is straight forward.

Beurocracy at its finest. Had you got the truck from NC, it could be a mish mash of everything and anything and you would be free and clear to carry on as you wished.

Alex.

i did get the truck in NC, whomever cobbled it together before i bought it, are the ones who tampered with the VIN tag, that's why i am having it inspected, to eliminate any hassle up front

I'm afraid you might've kicked the hive.
If you didn't need to do this then why wake the bureaucracy. I would've replaced with a salvage cab if I found a tampered VIN plate and cut up the tampered cab for scrap and patch panels to make it go away.

Then what are you doing? except for imposing self inflicted pain on yourself and as you can already see wasting time, not trying to be a jerk but you had a clean title, 40 year old cars are commonly pieced together with replacement parts

yep, but not with the vin tag altered, that's the thing... it being pieced together isn't the problem, so telling me i'm wasting my time etc. is not answering any questions, nor is it providing any useful info

i'll post an update when the inspector is done

I'm on your side best now than later, if you do what's right you have no worries. Know your legal before your like thousands into the build and something comes up and lose out.

Re: partial frame VIN/Cab VIN don't match question

any way to tell what year a cab is, if it has no VIN tag? are there numbers anywhere? or a specific design item that could identify the year?

inspector said he'll be here after lunch today... we'll see
