Finished mine a few weeks ago. Used ebony stain and spar urethane in satin finish. Four tries before I got the look that I wanted. Something that I did not think of, black shows EVERYTHING. Every speck of dust and every little imperfection in the finish is magnified . If possible do the urethane in a spray booth. All in all I'm happy with the way it looks.

That looks really good. I'll have to remember that technique for when I do the bed floor in my '66.

I used oak and painted it with reduced exterior latex on the '65 I restored. Had a similar look.

I noticed another option for black wood on the Mar K site where they tested different finishes. http://www.mar-k.com/final_summary.aspx and 2010 update at http://www.mar-k.com/june_2010_update.aspx

After years of testing they found that the following finish was the most durable compared to clear finishes. They did not compare different black finishes.

Oak boards, coated with three brushed coats of POR-15 Rust Preventative Paint three hours apart, then three coats brushed Behr best quality black exterior latex enamel, three hours apart.

That would have been a great idea. I wonder if anybody has redone their truck bed using the original formula and has left it out in the elements. I am also curious to know how the original finish holds up to the weather.

i did mine with southern yellow pine, linseed oil, lamp black and a binder. looks just like it did when you could still buy the bed boards from gm. been on 5 years and looks the same - however it doesn't stay out side all the time

my brother, the wood butcher, did his the same way but used oak. didn't come out black

What binder did you use? Do you recall the ratio of lamp black to linseed oil? I have the oil and the lamp black, but no recipe to create the concoction.

a lot of beers consumed the last 5 years. best i remember i winged it on the carbon black. i may have gotten a recommendation from where i got the binder as to how much binder. (i don't think the black/linseed ratio is overly critical)

i brushed it on and it flowed out with no brush strokes. took awhile to completely dry.

as far as holding up - i date to back when you could still buy the boards from gm and i bought a set for a 64 that got used hard and put away wet. had the truck over 10years and best i can recall the wood was still in excellent shape when i gave it to my kid...
i have a 65 that has the original bed wood and it is in like new shape. however it had a rare (pullman) camper top on it since new.

Sorry for adding to the going off topic direction here, but I'm going out on a limb and saying that our trucks had PAINT on the factory bedwood boards. Linseed oil and lampblack may have been used for older generation trucks, but i think ours had paint. I say this because I've had a little experience with both oiled finishes and paints, and my survivors show a lot more like regular paint than any pigmented oil concoction.
