Tacking down short in 66 horn relay now voltage regulator

Hello,
Can anyone suggest ideas on my 66 short?
I noticed the battery has been draining and thought it was in the horn relay but I have traced it to the voltage regulator. It appears to be grounding but I'm wondering if I even need the regulator as the truck has a 350 and auto Trans from a 71 El Camino. Do I need the voltage regulator with that alternator?
Thank you for the help.
Dan

Could be bad diodes in the alternator that will slowly drain the battery.... as for do you need a regulator YES but it does NOT have to be external ....are the wires ALL on the back of your alternator? OR are two of them on the side? PICS would help

Re: Tacking down short in 66 horn relay now voltage regulator

I will attempt a pic later today. Thank you.

I have traced the short to the regulator but, because the truck is new to me, i haven't had time to work it back further. I want to say there are 3 wires on the back of the alternator. Can the voltage regulator short? Is there anything internally that could cause this? It doesn't seem so but I am not an electrical guru so I will see if I can provide more info.
Thank you again.

Thought I would let everyone know that I found the short in the voltage regulator. Replaced it and everything is good.
