Another rusty, crusty MN 72

Picked this one up this morning. The pics didn't look too bad, in person was another story. Not sure what to think about the 80,xxx miles on the speedo, as the engine has been replaced and the drivers seat is trashed. Door panels and arm rests look really good yet. Radio and speaker still work and A/C still blows but not very cold. Runs drives and shifts good. This is not a parts thread... Just a rusty CST for your viewing pleasure. Has an unusual rear end cover also, but haven't crawled under to see exactly what it is.
Enjoy.

Re: Another rusty, crusty MN 72

That doesn't look that crusty. For a Minnesota truck I would've figured the sides would be swiss cheese. I used to have a '71 K20 that spent its entire life in Iowa. It was so bad that when you drove down the road, the bedsides would wobble back and forth.

Looks good! I'd drive the wheels off that thing!

Looks like that could be a Hickey rear diff cover. Example: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=489851

Doesn't look to bad, wonder what the the story could be on the gb door. Wonder if it has something to do with replacing the emblem

I like it! Wish I could find something similar. Depending on price of course :-)

If you look close you will see the tail lights are actually lower than the rear bumper... That is how far the body has dropped. The bottom of the tailgate and both doors are one big metal patch. And the quarter panel does move when closing the door. It is rough. Surprisingly the windshild frame looks nice.

Look close and you will see the hole for a shaft on a radio. Yes, it had a radio mounted through the door!

There is still some out there, just need to keep looking and be patient.

that looks way better than the 72 K5 donor that i picked up for all the little pieces missing off the 71 project i got for my dad. like you said about yours, the windshield frame doesn't look too bad on mine. mine sagged so much in the middle area that it broke the fiberglass top on each corner. looks like a bunch of good parts on yours.

Re: Another rusty, crusty MN 72

Just flip it. List it as "Good glass" . I see it has a posi rear and had camper mirrors. That looks like a Transdapt cover by the fins. Same vintage so just as cool. Many companies made stuff for these trucks and it's all cool in my book. I'm more of a Desert Dynamics fool than Hickey. They sold much of the exact same stuff Hickey had their name put on. I had a Blazer chock full of Desert Dynamics accessories: roll bar, axle trusses, brush bar, steel console, skid-plates, hitch, swing-away tire carrier, and dual auxiliary tanks inside. I had Transdapt differential covers on another one that I bought and installed. I think they took an extra quart of gear oil.

Re: Another rusty, crusty MN 72

Jerry, this top has a couple of stress cracks and i fear the body may fold if the top was removed. But like you say, alot of good parts and pretty complete yet.

Tim, i could try the "good glass" route, but the windshield is scratched...
Didn't i post pics of my desert dynamics catalog i have awhile back?

I don't think I saw that. I think I would have remembered. Not saying you didn't, but I must have missed it. Show us your lits!
I saw a Blazer in my local junkyard with Tommy's 72 when he was in MD. We couldn't open the doors. I'm sure if we could it would have finished the top off. It already was badly cracked

Does that SPID say P21?...Aux battery option

Eric you'd have to change the name of this thread if I had pics of that blazer Tim and I saw. Yours is not horrible, that one was

Re: Another rusty, crusty MN 72

Here is my moment of shame. This is the Blazer I had with all the Desert Dynamics stuff on it. It came from NM originally, but the owners moved to VA and discovered Assateague Island and exposed it to that ocean salt. I bought it for parts, even back in '83. I did consider restoring it once I saw how original it was. I drove it home just fine. It wouldn't start not long after I had it, no fuel from the pump. Bought a new pump and no change. That's when I realized all the grass was dead under the rear, took a look, and saw the tank was leaking. Sand was all packed between the skid late and tank. I went to Chevy and bought a new tank, tailgate, hatch, and a bunch of other stuff. There was the rust at the lower front of the quarters. One side had already been patched with galvanized. The main thing I was after with this one was the automatic set-up for a 3spd Blazer I had screaming for a better transmission. I hung onto it, pulled many parts, but it eventually ended up at my folk's place on top of a mountain where it can be misty a good bit (in the clouds). That didn't help, and I wanted to haul it down to my place, but it was either too much snow or the poison ivy had grown up through the trans tunnel and took over. It became a poison ivy greenhouse. It sat there and rotted away for 20 years. In the summer you couldn't even see it under all the poison ivy and grape vine.

Here, see for yourself. Ever see such poison ivy vine?

See where the door was when closed?

No aux battery option on it and doesn't look like there ever was one.
And you win for the crusty blazer pics... probably won't buff out...

No environmental impact study required up in them hills. They've either never heard of that yet or the laws exist elsewhere where someone might actually know what you're doing. There's still a frontier spirit up there and they just do what they do and screw the laws they make down-state . But, this is a prime example of the greenhouse effect, ya think? My environmental suit where I went in to grab some precious loose parts was 1) get there at the crack of dawn when it was coolest, 2) coveralls, 3) heavy rubber gloves, 4) get in and out fast as possible, and 5) run for a cold shower fast as I could. When I finally hauled it out (when first pictures were taken) it was early spring when snow was melted (spring came early that year) and before growth began. I get poison ivy bad and I never had an itch. Someone had stolen the freakin' gas caps off the auxiliary tanks (main tank was already gone)! I couldn't believe the ignorance. Those tanks were worth 100x of a couple used gas caps. This one had excellent glass...Soft
Ray!

Hey Tyler, have you forgotten what "undergrowth" is yet? One thing I loved about living in the west was you could go anywhere you wanted through the woods. Back east its stickers, hitch-hikers, poison, and biting bugs in the dead of summer. Your best bet is follow the deer tracks for the path of least resistance.

Here is what it looked like when I bought it in '82 0r '83. You can see it already had rust down low. Other than that it was virgin all there/all original with a slew of Desert Dynamics pieces, including 5 chrome wheels (spare on swing-away rack):

It's funny how you can miss that nasty stuff...even humidity. I never missed it out west, loved no bugs or undergrowth. But seeing the changes coming east makes you miss them. I got to Kentucky once and it was raining all day. Just green and lush like a jungle compared to the southwest. Things struggle to grow out there and back here we struggle to keep it from taking over!
