Bumper Dilemma

What to do, what to do, I have 2 very nice straight white bumpers, a front and rear bumper that I was going to have rechromed. I also have a set of NOS chrome bumper guards, but at 600.00 each to chrome I am wondering if it is even worth it. How are the repop bumpers now and how do the repop bumper guards fit.

Re: Bumper Dilemma

I have repop chrome bumpers on my 66 and they have been on it about 18 months and look good with no issues. I cant help on the guards.

Re: Bumper Dilemma

From what I’ve read the new repop bumpers look pretty nice, but they’re no match for an original replated with true triple chrome plating (copper, nickel, chrome). The new bumpers are “triple nickel plated”, meaning there isn’t any copper underneath which provides the intense reflection of show chrome.

But whether it’s worth another $500 (per bumper) for real chrome on an original part versus the import stuff is a good question I don’t know the answer to myself. At one point I thought about having a spare mint condition GMC grille plated and matching it up with repop bumpers and guards. Problem being I’m afraid the color or shine will be way off.

Also, I understand the repop bumper guards only fit on reproduction bumpers, so your NOS original guards may not fit a replacement bumper. And unless they are incredibly mint, they may not look very good on a freshly chromed bumper either, as most NOS parts aren't all that perfect.

I can attest that reproduction bumpers are much thinner than originals. I dimpled my aftermarket rear bumper just tightening it up the first time, something I’ve generally found impossible to do on an original. If the truck is going to be a driver, the money spent to have show-chrome put on an original part may be better spent on other accessories.

Re: Bumper Dilemma

LMC Bumper Guards only fit original equipment bumpers but they only sell aftermarket bumpers:

Re: Bumper Dilemma

Too bad you're not closer, I'd trade you my original chrome rear bumper for your painted.

Re: Bumper Dilemma

I called advance chrome about getting work done the first thing they asked what I was using the truck for, after I told them they told me they do top notch chrome but refer me to another vendor as I did need to pay what they charge for what I needed.

Re: Bumper Dilemma

I have my bumpers done by Keystone, yes they are expensive but the chrome is guaranteed for life. I just had my front bumper done and it was $450, incredible chrome job. If you find any blemishes when you receive the bumper they will take the bumper back and re do it.
Keystone is in Minnesota but there are dealers all over the country.
