6.0 swap advice
OK, so I was directed here for advice. I was given a good running 6.0 out of a 2004 2500 along with a 4L80E that needs to be rebuilt. I am debating whether I want to put it in my 71 or not. If I do, I know I will need a computer since I didn't get one with it. I did get the wiring harness and the DBW pedals. Where is the best place to get the computer (I am on a tight budget). Also, I want to go with a manual, what one is best. I was told probably a NV4500. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks Danny

Re: 6.0 swap advice
I'm not sure about the ecm,, maybe ebay or lqk,, on the harness my advise would be just get a custom harness built for your application,, it will make life easier and you wont regret it,, get it long enough to mount ecm under or behind the seat,, on the nv4500 that's a good choice but I can tell you from personal experience that will not be a cheap option. You can tie up a grand just connecting the engine to the nv4500. Not to mention the extreme cost of a nv4500..The 4L80 will be cheaper. I've got the 6.0 / nv4500 combo in mine.

Re: 6.0 swap advice
For a computer I would check Craigslist and local salvage yards. They are getting easier to find. Did you also get the tac module with the pedals? If you are running DBW then a computer (LS1B) with the green and blue connectors is used. I am running an NV4500 with my 5.3 on my 89 Chevy. The flex plate and clutch that I needed for the swap only costs a couple hundred if that. For the wire harness I re-worked the stock one, and removed the wires for the automatic transmission, rear 02 sensors and what ever else was not needed.

Re: 6.0 swap advice
I got my flywheel/clutch/bellhousing, bellcrank pivot stabilizer and trans nose for throwout bearing made by advance adapters(around $800-$1000) there are other ways to do it but they were the only ones i could find that make the whole setup..something else to consider is if you use a mechanical clutch is finding manifolds or headers that will clear the clutch linkage and cross member,, also if you keep the stock speedometer and use the gm nv4500 you will need something like dakota digital ($275-$300) to convert the electronic pulse to a mechanical drive,, if you use the dodge nv4500 it has a mechanical speedometer drive but you will have to change the input shaft to the gm one. Any way you go about it is not cheap.

Re: 6.0 swap advice
$1k for the adapter parts is crazy. I mean, not that it isn't worth it if thats the setup you need...but DAMN that adds a chunk to the cost of doing business.
...its one of those days I'm glad I'm a 2wd/auto

Re: 6.0 swap advice
I agree that's a lot but when a flywheel for a LS, clutch and pressure plate cost more than 600 add a couple hundred more for bellhousing,, add shipping and before you know it your there.. they just not laying around in junkyards...this started out as a build for another guy and half way thru he was tapping out on this so I bought it for a little more than what he owed. I don't think he understood me when I told him it wasn't gonna be cheap or easy..you want expensive buy a new southbend flywheel clutch and p-plate for a dodge cummings...talk about sticker shock..

Re: 6.0 swap advice
You opened a good "fruit for thought "deal"....as I know, all of the trucks take the same "thick' flywheel (.400 thicker than the ls-1), stick shift? If I missed anything, one of the rest , will come in , & straighten it out.....no issues Longhorn

Re: 6.0 swap advice
I know the advance adapter site states that the iron head 6.0 and the 4.8 flywheels will not work on the gen3 ls engine..they show all gen3 ls engine will carry the same flywheel.

Re: 6.0 swap advice
Is there a way to I D a 4.8/iron head 6,0 and the gen 3?
Maybe by weight. I guess I could look up part numbers from GM, thought someone might have a quick answer

Re: 6.0 swap advice
When I was looking all I could come up with was the 4.8 and 6.0 flywheel number was 12561756 and a 5.3 was 12561681..but I couldn't find a flywheel anywhere close to where I live..

Re: 6.0 swap advice
NFW1050 flywheel with an LS7 pilot bearing should get you going, do some research this is always a good place to start http://ls1tech.com/forums/conversion...swap-faqs.html followed by all of the build threads here in the LSX section.

GenIII' could have iron heads for the first year or two. 99/2k trucks could have iron heads, at least on the 6.0's. After that, they pretty much went all to aluminum heads. All joking aside, if it has iron heads, its usually worth walking away from. A 4.8/5.3 will look the same, but the 6.0's will have a "6.0" stamping on them.

Re: 6.0 swap advice
At least from what I've seen, they sure as hell seem the same to me. Unless there is something special on manuals that I havent seen, all the auto trucks have had the same flywheel, just with or without the spacer.

Re: 6.0 swap advice
Got this off novaks..dont know if it helps or not...The 5.3L Vortec has never been available with a manual transmission option. Only the 4.8L and 6.0L Vortecs featured manual transmission options and therefore a factory flywheels neutral balance*does match the 5.3L and other Gen. III+ engines

Re: 6.0 swap advice
Thanks for all of the great input. I may just go with the 4L80E due to the cost of the manual. It is going to take me a while to assemble everything I need anyway.
