85-87 grille moldings

These lil plastic pieces that hold the moldings to the grille are broken and I need them to finish my grille, but I can't find them any where for sale. All I can find is the whole molding with the "snap clips" already installed. Does any one know where I can buy just the "clips"? Thanks for any and all help.

As you have already found out. That piece of molding only comes complete with the 3 pins installed.

It is gm part 15616657 and is shown as item 11 in the parts dwg below:

As to whether you can buy aftermarket replacement clips only...IDK. Never seen them for sale.

This is just one I found that looks like it might be the one. There are a few other that look the same, just for a specific size molding. Check them out.

Yeah those little buggers are delicate-you have to squeeze them slightly to pop them out of the grill and they tend to break off on one side-then they're worthless.

I'm not sure if you considered a replacement grille or not but I just bought one for my 1987 silverado and those 4 chrome strips came already installed on it. It was only 26.00-28.00 not including shipping for the grille.

Re: 85-87 grille moldings

If you purchase one of the new aftermarket grill's, they do come with those attached, thought I found them and the aftermarket grill to be junk. Spent about a half of day sanding and working the new grill to make the center emblems fit. Since I didn't like the new stainless moldings on the end, I moved them over from the original grill, had the same problem with the tabs breaking. The best part about the new grill is they used better hardware to attached the stainless moldings than the original. It my understanding, Chevy did use a metal setup like the aftermarket in the beginning and moved to plastic later.

Here's a picture of the new hardware in the old molding

Enjoy,

Re: 85-87 grille moldings

I replaced the damaged original 85 grille in my truck with a aftermarket grille and don't like it. The bowtie emblem and moldings don't fit good. I have taken apart the original grille from my 85, a grille from a 86,87 and a 88 Suburban. The 86, 87 and 88 all had the little plastic "clips". The 85 grille had metal studs similar to the picture above. I know 100% that it was the original grille because it had the factory chalk marks on it that match the chalk marks on the rest of the truck. rideair, do you know where I can get the hardware like you have? That looks like the way to go! Thanks.

Re: 85-87 grille moldings

Natedogg,

That hardware came on the aftermarket grill purchased off eBay. You are correct, the center emblem did not fit worth a crap. I spent a couple of hours sanding and fine tuning the round caps that hold the emblem risers in place just to make it look correct, then reprinted Argent Silver. I personally would like to see a repo of the single head light grill version that has the bowtie built into it vs. just the straight bar looking one that was on the Custom Deluxe and Scottsdale trucks/Suburban's.

You could maybe use a bolt, just a thought

Enjoy,
