47-54 Power Steering Help

I need some help I want to add power steering to my truck but I don't want to spend 500 to 700 I'm purchasing a power steering kit I would like to see if anyone has an idea of what gearbox to use or if anybody has done this on a low budget any suggestions and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm using a 1985 Toyota 4x4 steering box tied up to a Saginaw type 1 pump. Had to get a custom pitman arm, will post a pic or PM you when I have it mocked up.

where in the world do you get a custom made Pittman arm? Those internal splines have to be a bear to machine.

CPP sells the pitman arm for the Toyota box. At least they did before they started making their own boxes.

I've been reading up on Electric power steering lately.

There's a few companies out there offering retro-fit kits. Basically, you keep the stock gear box. and put an electric motor/driver between the column and gear box.

The kits are ungodly expensive.

The units are modified GM units from Cobalts, Saturn Vue's, etc...

Here's my Toyota power steering installation. Still need a fitting on the ps box for the return line.

That looks like a clean install. What pitman arm did you use and does the Toyota box make for any more room versus the stock box? Just wondering about the more room question if one were to install a V-8 and use this setup?

Pitman arm was done for me by an acquaintance who is a metallurgical engineer as well as a certified pressure welder. The steering box end is mated to the original, then dye checked and magnafluxed.

The inside of the Toy box is 2 1/2 " inboard of the frame, and is a little higher than the original. Might be able to make it work by laying the box flatter and using a double U-joint to connect up to the column.

To adapt aeroquip fittings you will need a 16 and a 17 mm adapter. Only ones I could find came from Pure Choice Engineering.

Was 1/4 " material I used. For the inner fender steering box cutout, it only requires to cut back 1/4 to 3/8 on the cutout starting from the top of the arc and going back towards the rear with a cut. When installed, about 1/4" clearance between the inner fender and the steering box. That's with the box input shaft aligned with the column cutout in the cab.
