66 Wiring help for HEI

I have added an HEI distributor and need some help on the wiring.

I have the two yellow wires that used to go to the points distributor
a green wire and a black wire with a rubber connector. There are another set of wires that have been taped up prior so I'm thinking not important yet....

Anyone have ideas with the colors described before I start testing?

OK, after cleaning and removing the harness tape here is what I have found.

Dark Green
Light Green
Blue (w/ rubber connector)
Yellow
White(braided)

The white(braided) wire is connected to the yellow with a spade terminal that I think went to the old distributor.

For the HEI you will want to run a new wire from the fuse box. There should be a terminal that is only hot with the key on. Run a new wire off that. That way you don't have a resister wire running to it.

Tape up all the old wires from the coil. You can also use the pink wire going to your ignition switch. If you can go to a bone yard and cut a wire from an HEI as long as you can. one hot off your key and another for your tach is all the hei needs

Make sure to pull that white braided wire and toss it as far from your truck as possible, then find it and toss it a again. That resistor wire is a major pain in the @ss if hooked up to the HEI.

So dont just replace the braided wire. Run a new wire from the fuse block to the hei?

I'm also throwing in a shot of the wiring harness for a 6 cylinder with dummy lights. If I recall correctly, it uses type 56 terminals. BTW, it's a pic prior to swapping out to an HEI ...

as stated above find a switched power source on the fuse box use red color run it from that source to the terminal for it i believe it says batt on it but don't quote me the other terminal is for a RPM Tach so it you run one hook it up there and if not then don't worry about it .. now as for the old wiring its all useless but and im not bashing anyone . i just feel like maybe you would like to know why it is useless and i saw that it was not explained yet . so here it is in simple terms .. the points distributor can only handle so much voltage going to the points so they put that white braided wire AKA resistor wire in line to reduce the voltage so that your points wont cook ... a common mistake lots of people make when changing over to HEI is they use that wire and it will start and run but it runs badly because the HEI is not getting full voltage . so you get popping and sputtering under a load .. next im not sure if this is your 1st HEI Swap or not or even what engine your doing it in but lets just say if its a V8 after stabbing in the HEI go to your local parts store and buy a HEI re curve kit and fallow the directions on the package for your weight of vehicle and re curve it for that this is so that your new HEI Swap is tuned to your truck and engine a good match . this is done because some people will go pull a HEI out of a car lets say and put it in a bigger heaver car or truck and now the HEI isent giving optimal timing advance ... after this re curve kit is done simply set the initial timing at 12 to 13 degrees and your done should only take you about a Hour for the whole thing ... an easier way is to use the existing coil wire to trigger a bosch relay and run the hei power from b+ on the starter. use a 16 gauge fusible link off the starter connection.

Don't use just any gauge wire to the HEI. Make sure it's a 10 gauge.

10 gauge is fine. so is 12 but if you use a fusible link don't run a 10 gauge link
