Not so "Detroit" True Trac

Installing, along with Yukon 3.73 gears. I guess it's just a sign of the times, but "made in Taiwan" was a surprise.

Question Re: Not so "Detroit" True Trac

If you think of Detroit as a brand and not a place, it makes more sense. But, yes, it is still sad that now all we can get are Taiwan lockers.

Re: Not so "Detroit" True Trac

I had bought another another 12-bolt axle, so I could take my sweet time rebuilding it, with all new everything, including 3.73 gears and a Detroit True Trac.

Axle tubes TIG'd to the housing using 309L

Thorough cleaning and a coating of POR15

Original axle had 3.07:1 gears, an open diff, becoming even more open via a metallic sheen to the oil.

My truck has Heavy Duty brakes and the replacement axle does not, so I needed to swap the backing plates. Phase I complete.

Phase II: ???

Phase III: Profit!

Re: Not so "Detroit" True Trac

Those are some pretty heavy springs for a 1/2 truck! Almost look like 3/4 ton springs.

Re: Not so "Detroit" True Trac

Yes, it has heavy leafs and heavy duty brakes. If it had come with heavy coils it could have been a "Big 10."

I have 1-ton coils in it now - it's much better balanced front/rear now.
