1967 c10 drop opinions please
1967 c10, 1/2 ton fleetside, I6. The suspension is in good shape, only has worn shocks. Coil springs all around, it does have the one leaf option on the back for heavy loads.
So, I would like to lower it on the cheap. Not looking to go super low, just bring it down a couple of inches or so for looks. Years ago, I lowered the front of my 1969 firebird by taking a hacksaw to the coil springs, but ended up going lower than I liked. Does anyone know how to determine how much I should cut off the springs for 1 inch and for 2 inches? The springs look pretty good, I'm guessing no sag right now, so no need to account for that (I hope). I know the advice will probably be to buy lowering springs, but my budget can't afford that and still allow me to do the other things I need to do. Pictures of trucks lowered 1 and 2 inches would be awesome to let me know how much that change would actually be! Thanx in advance Here is a pic with a truck about as low as I'm looking to go: Last edited by dave`12; 09-14-2015 at 11:11 AM. |

Ok, so digging around I can already see that, unlike my car, 1-2 inches is not gonna cut it. Please ignore that and go by the picture (anyone have any idea about how much the picture is likely lowered?).

Coil in rear with one leaf? I've never seen that? Was that an option? Can I see a pic of that? I'm trying to wrap my head around it?

Each cool is approximately two inches. So cut 1.5 coil in front. And rear, if it is coils, get a 4 inch drop coil and a one inch drop block. Or 5 inch drop spring. Or a jeep rear coil will give you close to 5 inches.

Are you sure that truck is dropped? Looks like it has tall tires that fill the well but it doesn't look lowered to me.

Do not cut the rear coils! I know people have done it, and someone might suggest it. But don't do it. Either buy a drop spring or use a jeep coil.

It's dark and been raining, so the pic is not that good. The exhaust is in front of where the leaf stops. It does not connect, but would hit a bump when the suspension is loaded. I never had any problem with the firebird after I cut the coils, I just thought it was a bit too low. I've looked around, I think I want a 2" front and 4" rear drop. @hotrodsinner: So 1 and 1/2 coils in the front. Please tell me why I can't cut the rear? And which jeep spring? For a 4" drop? If you all think it would be dangerous, I would buy the rear. Don't see why I would use a drop block if that would only get me an inch, better to just buy 4" coil drop, I think. That's a "helper spring". My C-20 had those. I didn't know they were offered on 1/2 tons also.
It's supposed to help prevent bottoming out with heavy loads.

Re: 1967 c10 drop opinions please
you cannot cut the rear springs. you could add a lowering block though and theyre pretty inexpensive. 2" to start. as for the front spring, just cut 1 full coil off. if its not enoughyou can just pull it and cut another coil but i wouldnt do anymore than that.
and you can leave the add a leaf in the truck. its not hurting anything
