Bell housing casting number

I need a V8 bell housing for my '57 3100. Anyone know the casting number and perhaps the years that this casting was used?. Thanks.

3815891. They're all over that "costs too much" auction site.

Watch for differences between car and truck bellhousings. Truck housing puts two bottom bolts threading into trans from inside BH. Car housing has all four bolts threading into BH. Car housing has two bolt holes in "bottom" through the crossmember mount. Truck has only one and is at different angle. "Large" truck BH has larger pilot hole to acommodate bigger trans input shaft bearing retainer. If you're not using the original crossmember then either truck or car BH will usually work.

For comparison: Car BH's:

Re: Bell housing casting number

Thanks. I had already found those two sites and that is what prompted the question. I THOUGHT I knew what I needed but after perusing those sites, (particularly the 4 speed conversion one), what became clear was that it was NOT clear what bell I needed. It seemed like the 505 would be the one I needed but then some questions arose that suggested that maybe not. Was just hoping that someone had one verified to have come from a 55-59 with a V8 so I could be ABSOLUTELY certain to get the right one.

I think you are ok with a 55 to 62 bellhousing that has the starter mounted in the bellhousing. After 62 I think just the bigger trucks had the cast iron bellhousing and they also came with the larger hole for the bearing retainer.

I couldn't tell you what year the one in my 48 is, it came out of my buddy's parts stash when I was doing a mad 3 week from bare frame to driving truck put together ( I won't call it a build) in Aug 1989. I think he contributed the trans too.

Re: Bell housing casting number

The casting number I gave is correct for 57-59. In 60-63 GM switched to a hydraulic clutch with the fork coming out the RH side. Casting number is 3765710. 55-56 bell is *almost* the same as 57 with the exception of how the fork ball threads into the bell and the starter bolt holes. Here is the 55-56 BH... notice there is no allen hole to remove the ball. (photo with red background).

I believe the 505 is a med duty truck bell. Look at the amount of metal remaining in the machined transmission flanges in these pictures Also notice there are no threads in the bolt hole for the rear engine mounts. The MD truck uses a nut and bolt combination for the mounts. (505 is second photo, 891 is last).
