53 GMC Dash question

i recently purchased a 53' GMC pickup. The dash looks nothing like I have ever seen. I will have to get a picture tomorrow and post it. My question is this does anyone know which dash is supposed to be in there. Every catalog i find shows that it has 2 circles for the gauges but when I google search it it shows this

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks

Re: 53 GMC Dash question

This dash is a 1954, one year only.

Re: 53 GMC Dash question

Looks like you have a Chevy dog house on a GMC, I doubt someone changed the dash on a Chevy truck
Your dash looks like what I started with for my GMC

Re: 53 GMC Dash question

Thanks for the input guys. I guess 53 just has the 2 circles so someone has tried to make this one a Frankenstein. Guess I will be on the look out for a 53 dash.

Re: 53 GMC Dash question

do you have a one piece windshield or a two piece windshield with the divider bar in the middle?

1954 and 1955 first series used that dash.

Re: 53 GMC Dash question

so here are the pictures of the dash sorry it took so long.

@joedoh it has the divider so I know it is not a '54 but the dash looks like someone hodge podged something together. Which from everyones input im going to have to get a new dash with the 2 circles.

Kustom with gauges from "gauge of the month" club. Call it a rat rod and move on.....

Re: 53 GMC Dash question

its not funny, but that started out as someones good idea. looks to be just bondo'd in there, chip it out and weld in new/used.

99 to life has a project thread in the projects section that looked like a wolverine chewed on his dash and the first time I saw it I thought "you cant come back from that" and he has one of the cleanest trucks on the site now, so get yourself a chunk of dash and measure a lot before welding it in.

joe you are right, I probably should have kept my thoughts to myself, at one point is was someones pride and joy with a lot of labor involved.

Re: 53 GMC Dash question

I wasnt picking on you orrie, my comment was meant to be internal reference, self encapsulate...

I just always admire guys that try, there are a whole lot of people (again, not you or anyone in this thread or forum that I have encountered) who will judge someones best effort without ever putting their best effort out there for judgement.

Re: 53 GMC Dash question

I found myself wondering about the situation that caused that cluster to be built. I thought "gauge of the month club" was a great answer! It doesn't take anything away from the builder: Anyone old enough to have signed up for Columbia Records' monthly clubs surely knows what it's like to get a bad selection or ten.

It's kind of neat that everything is there. The round indicator top center, likely high beam, looks like one from an International truck of the '70s. I have no idea where the turn signal indicators are from. The fuel gauge looks like Stewart Warner OTC. Temp gauge looks like a cheap Chinese unit I bought several years ago, and the ammeter and oil pressure gauges are marked with Stewart Warner's logo but I believe I've seen them in an OE truck application.

Truly interesting.

Re: 53 GMC Dash question

It looks like he just cut the metal between the 2 gauges. If a chevy gauge fits in the hole then just do a little grinding and cut a a piece of metal to seperate them again.

Re: 53 GMC Dash question

It may be less work then you think to bring it back if you grind off all the bondo.

Could just be a simple frame tacked to the original dash.

Re: 53 GMC Dash question

Right now someone is searching ebay for that speedo for their restoration, that could pay for the repairs!
