57 headliner retainer install

I want to know if the round tube goes between the roof and the inner cab?
What direction does the seal go? Which edge covers the inner cab and which hold up the headliner?

Re: 57 headliner retainer install

tube goes in between the roof and lower panel
headliner is glued to the roof
new trim would not fit in my truk no matter how much we pried and pushed
soap may help, i couldn't soap mine due to using ultra suede fabric for the headliner
we ended up tearing it and using black door edge trim instead

pictures here, best bet is pick a hot day, soak it in a bucket of boiling water to soften it.. use a plastic window scarper or bondo knife to push on it with out cutting it. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...35#post5728635

Here are 2 pictures of the finished product. When you're ready to install all of the molding, you will find that that sucker is a tight fit. I needed to use something that was super slippery to help me out, and not stain or damage either the headliner or the molding. Ready for it ..... KY Jelly! That stuff worked great and it cleaned up with water and didn't leave any evidence of being there.

Re: 57 headliner retainer install

nice job, thanks all. I glued the molded headliner to the roof this time with gorilla glue. An 8 once bottle and supported it with props. I used trim from JoAnns fabric store (50% off coupons are always available from the wife) and trimmed it out.
I still like the finished job you had and wish I could have pulled it off.
thanks,
larry

That headliner is from Carsinc.com. Here's the link:

Re: 57 headliner retainer install

Anybody got any updates as to whether there are different manufacturers for the retainers?

Mine is so heavy and stiff, I don't see how it's ever going to go in.

Got it from Classic Parts of America.

Re: 57 headliner retainer install

The headliner I bought was glued to a heavy cardboard backer. I tried to install the original rubber headliner retainer. The straight parts were easy, the corners were impossible. I ended up buying black edge trim off of ebay and install it. It looks good and I did not tear up the headliner trying to install it.

I've got an interior shop doing this for me at the same time as a custom carpet job.

He called me and said the only way it might go is cutting the round tubing part off in the corners.

He's going to look at alternatives also.

3M 08897 Silicone Lubricant (Dry Type) is very good for all that kind of interior rubber and window rubber. Doesn't leave a stain and is very slick

Re: 57 headliner retainer install

Mine is fabric over 3/16" foam (edges beveled) on 1/8" masonite. It was a wrestling match to get it in. I had bought some split U plastic used for door edge guards to cover the metal edge, but could not get it in and did not want to scratch up the paint. Not much room at the corners...

Re: 57 headliner retainer install

I've liked it when I see guys use chrome door edge trim - but I didn't know it was a biyatch to get the original back in and that's probably why they did it!

Re: 57 headliner retainer install

Got my truck back from the interior shop.
He didn't use the new rubber I bought. He said no way it would have worked as is or cutting the tube. So, he used some other edge trim he had on hand.

I think it looks perfect!

I posted photos of his carpet job on the "What did you do with your truck today?" thread if you want to see the super job he did with that too. Posted those in my build thread too if you follow that.
