frame and suspension painting?

i'm looking at a some of the drop member type suspension systems which all come in bare steel...and yes there is an option of powdercoating, but i can't justify the expense given that it will be 1. for a daily driver, and 2. i live in a non-rust issue state 3. it's not going to be a show car

the questions: will a product such as POR15 or similar chassis paint be sufficient in strength, longevity, and attractiveness (simple and clean) for the purpose of the entire chassis and the new metal pieces that i will be driving on everyday in Los Angeles traffic and then dusting it off on occasion for a cars-n-coffee event

Re: frame and suspension painting?

I used por15 initially. Did all the prep and it looked fine. Problem was it started lifting in places. If it got chipped the moisture would get under it and cause it to lift. I ended up removing it and painting it with 2k epoxy. I am much happen with it. This is what I short this weekend. It was done under my truck with a ****ty gun too.

Even though its not going to be a show truck, consider powder coating. Find a local shop and have it done after you mock everything up. It will make you happy once its done.

Re: frame and suspension painting?

POR15 is NOT a frame paint, like everyone is led to believe. POR stands for Paint Over Rust.

Epoxy paint is a better option, if you start with clean metal.

Being a daily driver, maybe a tractor enamel type paint is an option? I have never used it, but maybe something to look in to.

Re: frame and suspension painting?

I have had good luck with rustolium for painting everything from truck parts to tractors. Holds up really well and can look good even rolled on.

^^I might end up doing this in the future but I didn't want even thing to rust as I built it. I knew it was going to be a long process so I figured I'd paint it as I go so I can enjoy it a bit without it rusting.

Re: frame and suspension painting?

I used a product called Hammerite. Cleaned up the framethe best I could and applied like POR 15. I think it looks great and has held up very well. Plus I bought it locally at a well stocked Ace Hardware. It is a rust encapsulating paint as well.
