Original inline 6 flywheel, please help
I come from the 67-72 world so please forgive me if this is a dumb post. Google has let me down up to this point.
I am working on a 59 Apache that is basically all original. Inline 6 (I forget the displacement, pretty sure there was only one at the time) with 3 speed manual on the column. The clutch is trashed and the flywheel is pretty bad as well. THIS FLYWHEEL HAS TIMING MARKS ON IT THAT YOU VIEW AROUND THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE BY THE STARTER. Otherwise it looks fairly similar to anything else you would see from the 60s/70s/80s. The disk and pressure plate look very "normal", the disk is 10 inch. Is this flywheel available aftermarket? I can't seem to find one and with the grooves in this one I'm pretty sure it can't be turned enough. Is there a newer flywheel that I should use and just find a way to time the engine off the balancer like a later model? The disk and pressure plate show to be available at any parts store, looks like they were used for years. The flywheel is my concern. Any guidance is appreciated.

Count the number of teeth, it should be 153 or 168, If your looking for a new flywheel, check summit, jegs , you'll need a replacement with the same no. of teeth. also measure the center hole. The new ones will not have the timing marks. Some engine shop resurface flywheels, I've had a couple done without any problems, and it was about 2/3 the cost of a new one. good luck.

Re: Original inline 6 flywheel, please help
If the flywheel came off your 59 it would be a 235 engine. It was used on the 6 cyl. through 62. The later models won't fit. Your flywheel can be surfaced ground. Most auto machine shops can do it.

Re: Original inline 6 flywheel, please help
Timing marks can be copied from one flywheel to another with some ingenuity. If you are searching for aftermarket flywheels the tooth count is important as previously mentioned. Different clutches have been used with the 235 over the years so a replacement flywheel may require a new clutch as well. I'd do plenty of research on fitment if I found a flywheel that required a larger clutch.
An engine shop generally won't charge you to evaluate whether or not your current flywheel can be reused. Grooves around the flywheel are nowhere near as bad as lines that start at the center and go toward the outer edge. If you have actualy heat cracks in the surface you may be on the right track... get a new flywheel. There are several on Ebay right now. Here's a nice reference with casting numbers to help ensure you get the right part: http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com...57cmpc0147.htm Last edited by 1project2many; 12-12-2015 at 10:14 AM. |

Re: Original inline 6 flywheel, please help
Thanks guys. I've had many flywheels turned over the years. I have a feeling the heat lines going from center out on this one are going to be too deep. That's why I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row in preparation for plan B. I am not against transferring the timing marks to a new flywheel if there is an easy one to find that fits.

The one that came off the truck is a 168 tooth and the disc is a 10". So the general consensus is that there is NOT a direct bolt on reproduction of this flywheel??? In other words nothing that is physically the same dimensions AND has timing marks? Maybe a good used one from ebay that can be turned is the only option. Thanks again!

Re: Original inline 6 flywheel, please help
Nothing that isn't custom made will have timing marks. I6 engine popularity was near zero for many years so little profit in building replacement flywheels. Some custom places like Kanter may have something available but expect to pay $$ and be disappointed when part arrives.
Later engine flywheels don't work. They're the same as V8 flywheels. Pilot hole in center is larger. Bolt circle is larger. Thickness is greater. Look at both auctions below to see pictures. Second auction is for resurfaced OE flywheel for your application. http://www.ebay.com/itm/CHEVY-II-NOV...p2047675.l2557 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1955-62-Chev...FV0zaU&vxp=mtr |
