What's my options for keeping 3 on the tree?
I have slowly searched for a replacement Muncie 3 speed for my '68. I'm tired of her sitting in the garage, & I'm ready to get her back on the road. The transmission needed a rebuild so I pulled it, with the intention to do it myself. When I drained it, there was about 10 oz. of crystal clear water inside. When I opened it up there was some pitting on the main shaft. I figured I'd just look for another Muncie, but after 6-8 months I've had no luck. What are my options? Do I look for a Saginaw complete with linkage? Will I have to replace the driveshaft if I go with a Saginaw? Or do I just pay ($500) to have the one I have rebuilt? I just want to get my truck on the road

Ya know it seems like a lot of money to rebuild, but ya get a new tranny and everything fits. Your gona have to pay for a used Saginaw anyway. I vote rebuild yours?

That transmission is so common, I would look on a site like car-part.com which allows you to do a search of junkyards nationwide. You can probably find a good used one for a couple hundred$

Just for drill, there is a "good take out" like yours for 200 bucks on ebay. it's the only one I see for sale though.

Re: What's my options for keeping 3 on the tree?
I've got three trucks with 3ott. I don't plan on using any of them. I am a ways from taking them out though. One is a 68 the other two are 70's. I have a customers 69 in the shop that needs to get farther along before i can take time to work on mine.

That's a M318 non sycro 1st gear . I thought they quit usen them in 67. Anyway. the newer Muncie is more like a sag. 3 speed. bigger and the linkage is different. As mentioned before, there are a lot of those used 318 trannys around. Some guys call em 319 but I'm pretty sure that the O/D is the 319

I say rebuild yours! Obviously, there may be problems with parts needed inside so ask around at local transmission shops before you give it to one.
