Does my stock 85 TH700 come with a 27 or larger spline?

I'm 90% sure it's a 27, I don't think they used the 30 spline until 87...

There are basically 3 versions of the 700r4. From '82 until '84 there was a small-input-shaft unit with the same spline as the 200c transmission. From '85 to '87 there was a large input shaft version, which has the same spline as a 350 trans. The early torque converter ('82-'84) will not install, so there is no danger of using the early torque converter on the large shaft. From '87 1/2 up, the large shaft is still used, but GM incorporated an auxilary valve body to cushion engagement into drive.

Ummm are you talking about input shaft or output shaft? I would assume output shaft. 700r4, like its brother the th350, are 27 spline

82-84 27 spline
85+ 30 spline One reason I had a 85 Camaro 700R4 core rebuilt for my truck. ![]() |

I thought it was 30 but I wanted to make sure. Bowtie Overdrives TH700 is now ORDERED!!! They use an 88-93 core but do have a 27 spline version. Score! I'm EXCITED!

Why would they go back to a 27 spline? Unless its hardened. GM went to a 30 spline because stouts engines would strip the input shaft.
