external oil filter: really needed?

Hey guys, previous owner installed an external oil filter on my 59 with a six cylinder engine. Is it really needed? Did they come from the factory with these filters? I only drive to local ice cream joint occasionslly, or for a ride out to dinner. Not a daily driver.

Re: external oil filter: really needed?

It was leaking, so I took it all apart. Think I got it fixed. Thanks.

Re: external oil filter: really needed?

I'd say leave it.

I have a '36 Plymouth that spent most of its life without a filter. I had to drop the pan a couple of years ago and it took a day to clean the garbage out of the pan and block. I installed a filter when I put the car back on the road. I wish you could have seen the garbage that I took out of the filter canister after one summer. It made a heckuva difference.
