Floats could be set to high and gas could be sloshing into the overflow of the float bowl causing sooty plugs. Have you checked the screw for tightness where the gasket is wet?

I have never had luck using carb/choke cleaner to find a vacuum leak, I don't think it is flammable enough. I have had best results spraying starting fluid (ether) at suspected areas, throttle shaft at sides of carb, base gasket, vacuum connections etc. Spray a spot and wait 5 or 10 seconds before spraying the next spot.

Yes to checking the tightness of screws. I have not tried starting fluid around gaskets Etc. I'll give it a shot. if the floats are adjusted too high, would that cause the engine the engine to run rough at the initial Rev.. I can feel it in my steering wheel just sitting there another way to describe it would be like an engine not firing on all 6 cylinders until the RPMs pickup.
