Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
Im 99% sure its the pedal itself, I haven't had time to pull it back apart but when it happens i can kill the key, unplug and replug the pedal and fire it back up and works like a champ. I modified the pedal a bit and changed the pedal "arm" to a straight one out of another pedal. Im gonna pull it apart in the next couple of weeks and see if i can find any issues. Its crazy as i can drive 100 miles with no issues, then one trip to the store and back it'll do it? Im thinking something with at bad connection inside the pedal.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
Thanks man... I went back to your pics on page 1 and studied a little harder and was glad to see that is the same setup that I have. I was under the assumption that it would'nt fit between the frame rails with the low ac compressor on the pass. side and figured I had to get a non factory bracket set up. I notice you just removed that strange vacuum pump? that was under the water pump. That is great news, less cash to fork out on mechanicals.... Do you mind telling me what brake setup that is?
I think I'm gonna go with this setup and appreciate all the help you've offered. I may not be brave enough to figure out the rework on my factory harness but I hope to do everything else... Thanks again and that is ONE SWEEEET TRUCK!! I bet it pulls like a locomotive huh... |

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
actually i kept the vacuum pump, it clears with no issue and I'm planning on doing a big cam setup eventually, So the pump solves the vacuum issue. It is designed to work with the dod on the stock engine, When the ecm shuts off the cylinders it eliminates engine vacuum so the pump solves that issue. On mine i deleted the dod option in the ecm so i don't have that concern now but if you wanna keep it then the pump is necessary. It will clear the frame well with both the pump and ac compressor, I did do a small step down in the frame to clear the lines going into the ac compressor though

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
I noticed you said you are using the factory fuel pump, module, and pressure sensor. Did you use the stock fuel system wiring harness for these? Are you using a fuel regulator? What fuel tank are you using? Thanks for the help.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
I'll chime in here.... Im pretty sure he used the stock modded harness and no regulator is needed since the computer is telling the in tank pump what the high pressure pump needs. I too am curious about his tank selection, ready to order one now for my build.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
for the tank I'm running a summit fuel cell. Had to modify the top in order to make the factory pump assembly work. Also had to shorten the assembly a bit in order for it to fit inside the cell. If i were doing it again Id probably get a boyds tank as they have more volume than mine.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
Can you also tell me what radiator and fans you're using? Looks like the radiator bolted up with the original mounts?
Thanks |

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
I'm using a stock style aluminum 4 core. As far as fans Im running a single spal. Ive just got it wired in to a manual ground kill switch for the relay at the moment. It keeps the truck cool just fine right at 210 but Im wanting to upgrade the fan and then get the necessary stuff for the computer to control them. The signal is pwm and I've read many differing opinions on running that signal directly to the fan relay. It works as we've hooked it up temporarily but wasn't sure if it was a long term solution...

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
so finally pulled the trigger and bought a new pedal, couldn't figure out the issue with the other one. Local dealership had one in stock. $80 later the problem is solved!! Ive got about 1500 miles on it and have not been disappointed. Haven't driven it much lately as haven't had a lot of free time, hate driving it to work too much as i get pretty dirty and don't wanna get my seat and interior nasty.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
So turns out the bulkhead connector I used originally was a pos, it had some connection issues rearing its head causing the pedal issue as well as a random backfire that started recently... But thanks to 87CHEVY.COM we replaced it this weekend with a good quality one. This guy is a wiring guru. thank God...... Now its back to running like a champ with no issues and it looks even better than before. Ill get some pics of the bulkhead plate that we fabricated to house the bulkhead connector, ecm, relay and fuse block and the large circuit breaker.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
Hey! Getting ready to pick up a 2016 l83/6l80e combo for my daughters '68. I installed a 2008 l92 in my '72 suburban. Is the install on this similar? Are there any major differences between the older ls installs and the new ones? I see that the power steering pump is now gone, what system did you use for the power steering? As far as fuel system, does Rhein tank pump still have to put out 65 psi? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! Shawn

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
aboesec10 I like your truck. I am in the process of putting an L83/6L80E in my '67 GMC. I am trying to get all of the correct parts the first time around so am doing as much information gathering as I can. It seems that you, 87chevy, Hart, and several others on here have considerable knowledge in the swapping and tuning area.
I have lots of questions but will hopefully find the answers via the forum without bugging you guys too much on something already posted. I didn't find info on several things. So... What specifically did you use for motor mounts/engine mounts? I have yet to figure out if the mounts are the same on the Gen Vs as they are on the Gen 3&4s. Did you use the electric PS pump from a Gm pickup or an after market electric pump? Would these electric pumps support the PS and Hydroboost? I have the entire 2016 Silverado to utilize parts. My intension is to use all of the fuel system except the fuel tank. A Boyd's is in the plan, but Im not sure the pump will fit into it without mods. My plan is to have tilt steering column, cruise, OD lock out and manual (electric) shift capabilities. Does anyone out there make a column that has those capabilities in an after market column for the 67-72's? Thanks for any help from anyone. Doug |

Minuteman99, I'm also in the process of installing a L83 Gen V into my 68 and have been doing extensive research on how to best approach it. I am no expert and have been on here reading from the experts who know more than me on these motors, Adoesec10 and 87 Chevy. Because the L83 has only been out about a few years, there are many challenges facing a swap in our trucks. I probably will start a new build thread as I've already installed my motor earlier this week so, let me summarize my plans and hope that it helps you. For mount, I went with MuscleRodzs Motor mounts and transmission cross member,( Pricey as heck) which they guarantees a direct fit with no fabrication which I had no problems. Since the L83 has no power steering pump,I went with ICT Billet's mounts. The only down side to that is, it mounts the PS pump on the passengers side of the motor, not a big deal for me. For brakes, I will retain the vac pump for now and use it to provide vacuum for my Brakes. I was told by someone that the Purge Valve Solenoid ( located behind the motor under the harness) has enough vacuum for the brakes however, you will have to delete the DOD in the computer though, as it will kill all the vacuum. Hope this helps but research will be your friend. |

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
Thanks nawlinjoe, Muscle Rodz is higher than my pockets are deep. I have also looked at ICT. Hopefully more on here will respond with some additional options. I have seen in a dif thread where 87chevy made some.

Re: l83 gen v in a 68 c10
Couple questions.
Do you have pix/part numbers of the fuel stuff you got for the swap? What exhaust manifolds/mods did you use? Thanks!
