SPID Paint Option # vs. Color Names?

I was kicking back doing some web research on my 1972 C10's SPID and just learning more about our trucks.
My 1/2 ton long box was built at the Fremont Plant.
My SPID paint code states: 544 White/Medium Red.
So, a few questions:

Is Option #544 referring to my two tone paint scheme?
The SPID does not show a specific option code for the White color.

Cross referencing online I could not find the 544 paint code for my 72'.
Instead I'm finding Red Orange with a code #524 and #521 for the White.

I know many say the color is Hugger Orange, so is the Red Orange 524 just a code number for the after market paint suppliers like PPG?

Some photos below for anyone who can enlighten my curiosity and anyone else interested.

Thank you all for a great forum site,
Sam

Re: SPID Paint Option # vs. Color Names?

Your truck originally had a 521 white roof (only) and a 514 medium red body (544=521 over 514 in a conventional two tone pattern (only the roof is white)). You had a conventional two tone, so the white on the bottom has been added, ala 69-70 deluxe two tone style. (72 deluxe two tone, if you had it, would have had the white in the middle). Conventional two tone codes start with a 5, deluxe two tones start with a 4. Hugger and Red-Orange not involved. 544 example:

Thanks Jocko,
Interesting, simple math on how to decipher the paint code on the SPID.
I always wondered about the paint on my 72" because I only see that scheme on the earlier years.
I now know you are correct because it had a repaint from the previous owner.
I really like the current paint scheme even though it's not correct for the 72'
Much appreciated for the info.

you bet Sam. As Deluxe two tones go, I personally prefer the 69-70 with white on the bottom, but I bet it's a bear to keep shiny! My preference is for non-white conventional two tones, solid color trucks, or conventional two tones - kinda in that order. But they all look good!

a Sun Super Tach II, of course. (just kidding, I have no idea, it's not my truck - I liked the truck and saved the pic and the SPID long ago for an occasion just like this).

Ok, curiosity got the best of me, had to go back and look - had a few other pics of the truck. What do you know! It DOES have a Sun Super Tach II, but in the dash. Looks like a clock to me. Maybe it's a stopwatch to measure quarter mile times (which are vastly improved by the addition of the Tach....)

Ha, just kidding. Not dingin the truck - I actually really like it, that's why I saved the pics. Never noticed the dash protrusion thingy before now though.

That truck was For Sale on EBay and Craigslist a couple years ago. I may even have the spid at home. It had Factory Cruise Control but as you can see in your pic Mark the lever is ( was ) broken.

Re: SPID Paint Option # vs. Color Names?

Jocko, what paint code would a medium blue poly (501) and white top (521) be? Or was that even an option? That is the paint scheme I am thinking about for my 70.

Thanks,
Mark

Tom, thanks for the reply. Would the code be the same for 70 vs 72?
