Calling for help from all the old timers

Hey guys the direction I'm choosing to go with my truck is a period correct hot rod sixties so my question is can I get a list from all you who know whether it be the old timers or the young guys what types of things were used on popular hot rods in the sixties accessories license plate frames you name it all popular items that would have been done in the sixties by the hot rodders I would greatly appreciate this I've looked up as much as I can on Google and have come up very short thanks again happy Truckin. Also please include the names of the items and the makers and where I may be able to find them

Best way is to just start looking at 1950s/60 Hot Rod and Rod and Custom magazines.

Fairly eclectic era the 60's when you think about it. From flatop haircuts to "long hair hippie type pinko-fags" as one song writer said . From Gasser style to "Mod" style customs. I remember my neighbor having a garage built Henry J hot rod and I remember another neighbor more well off that (his dad) purchased a new 65 GTO for him. Seeing mini bongo drums or little dogs with bouncing heads in the package trays, I remember when shrunken heads on the rear view mirror were cool.

This should be an interesting thread. I too am building in a somewhat Hot Rod style. Mine is not period correct, except for the fact that I am trying to preserve everything original on my truck as much as possible.

I do have the finned valve covers and oil pan which I think fits into the 60's hot rod style. I have the 3" white walls but that maybe more of a 50's hot rod. I look forward to what ideas you get. Ordering a Moon Equipment catalog might give you some ideas as well. A lot of the stuff they sale is 60's era custom accessories.

I am on the same track. MOON, So Cal, Speedway Motors. I got a Moon Blue sparkle steering wheel, So Cal gauges on an engine turn metal panel, Salt Flat mags, White 1" Pleats with black french seam (tuck-n-roll) seat. Finned covers. Loud pipes. It did have side pipes at one point. Goofy Foot pedals, piston shift knob changed because it was catching finger.

Cool so far I have the finned covers and air cleaner ....and a red moon eyes steering wheel and aluminum slot mags

Stewart Warner gauges, Sun tach, Edelbrock intake, Ansen Sprint wheels or black steel wheels, back a little lower than the front, M&H Racemaster tires on the back, stack injection would be cool, Hurst shifter and a bell helmit. Just a few that I remember. Here is a good video to get your out to match the truck. And if you watch it you will find a truck or two.

I kinda kept mine old school. Left the suspension alone, blanket seat cover, hung some gauges under the dash, dressed up the six a little.

one thought on "era correct"-ness when it comes to 60-66 trucks as hot rods... They weren't. People didn't hot rod em back then, they were utilitarian. They're hot rodded now, of course, and in ways that people hot-rodded 60's cars, so that would be the look to emulate. My suggestion would be:

sbc, vintage offy dual wcfb intake, track down some wcfbs and stick the expnsive little vette dual quad air cleaners on there, finned alum vette valve covers - and make sure to have the oil filler in the front of the manifold ala pre-69, nothing 'new' on the motor, NO chrome, yellow accel wires, and a pertronix kit. Then, slap a tach on the column (preferably a Sun Super Tach - ok, a bit more 70's..), a 5 speed dressed out as a 4-speed, otherwise bone stock interior (fawn), and then wheels and tires - keep em tall, narrow in front, a "little" wide out back (no 50 series, too short, 275-60-15 a good choice, NO raised white letters, NO whitewalls (it aint the 50's), and vintage ansen slots or cragar s/s (the real ones), oh, and of course, headers and glass packs, and a VERY slight rake for a stance - let the tire choice do that for you. Voila. Hot rod.

Had the same thought in the start,Kept in thought the sixtie's look as I did the build.Metal flake,Guages,interior etc.I had a gasser style before not very street friendly.

Unfortunately,, most of us that were there in the 60's really can't remember that much of it... <grins>
