1991 electric suburban gauges into a square ls swap

So guys i wanted to see if any one could help me out on this . Long story short i have got a hold of 91 burban gauge cluster and i have the voltage to work the temp (with adapter on the passanger side head and electric sender) but o cant seem to get the speedo to work i repined it and ran a wire from the 4k output to the speedo but no luck . I thought it was the speedo that was bad so i found a guy parting out a 90 burban and took thoes gauges and still nothing . Am i missing something .

did you repin the cluster connector or plug it directly in? if so, you have to repin it to match your truck, super simple as the printed circuit is easy to read. The speedo is simply, ground, power and vss input. nothing else. If you have the connector pinned correctly, verified power and ground is good, verified vss output, you got a bad speedo. I have a spare one or 2 in the attic

If you know it works, its narrowed down to the wiring or ecu. Double check the correctly pinned , power, ground and signal from the pcm. Then check the vss output sensor wires to pcm. If wiring is good pcm or pcm calibration somehow is bad

Re: 1991 electric suburban gauges into a square ls swap

Check continuity from the VSS wires (Pin A ppl/wht, Pin B lt grn/blk) to the PCM connector C2 (green connector) Pin #'20 (lt.grn/blk), and Pin #21 (ppl/wht). The output wire to the speedometer is also from connector C2, pin #50 (grn/wht). Again, check continuity on this wire. If continuities are good, and terminal pins are firmly in place, then you can check VSS output by raising the rear of the truck, disconnect the VSS connecter, put your test leads on the two VSS pins, the meter on AC voltage and have someone put the truck in drive so that the rear wheels move. If you have an AC voltage reading, then the VSS is working. Or, you can just back probe the C2 connector at pins #20 and #21 for the voltage reading (probably safer). If that's good, then the PCM is most likely the culprit. Assuming, of course the connection at the speedo is good. The film circuit boards can sometimes be tricky

Re: 1991 electric suburban gauges into a square ls swap

Had another thought after writing the previous post. If you have access to a scan tool, see if it has live data for a speedometer reading. That would tell you that your electronics part of the "equation" is working

Re: 1991 electric suburban gauges into a square ls swap

When you installed the Burb speedo., did you re-pin the cluster wire connector from your truck (what year, BTW?) to match that of the "90 Burb? Here's what the cluster wants to see;

Pin # Wire and original color
1= Hi Beam, Lt.Grn
2= Ground, Blk
3= Oil Press., Lt.Brn
4= 12V ign. Feed, Pnk/Blk
5= Low Volt Light, Dk. Brn
6= Not used
7= Not used
8= Coolant Temp., Torquise
9= Illumination, Lt. Gray
10= LH. Turn Sig., Lt. Blu
11= RH. Turn Sig., Dk. Blu
12= Empty
13= Seat Belt, Yel.
14= Fuel Sender, Pink
15= Brake, Lt. Brn/Wht
16= Serv.Eng.Soon, Drk. Brn/Wht
17= 12V Ign., Pnk/Blk
18= VSS from PCM, Lt. Blu/Blk

When I did my '80 LS swap, I used the '90 Burb cluster, and the only wires that did not have to be swapped were #'s 1, 4, and 13
