what shifters are you guys using on 4l80e
I'd like to start working on how to shift this beast and don't need anything spectacular. I ready over on hamb that people have used the ford aerostar floor shifter. I've really liked the idea of putting an older car floor shifter in I just don't know the logistics to make it work.
I'm trying to avoid going with a 300 dollar plus shifter if I don't have to. (I added up my build sheet the other day and its a lot higher than I thought!) |

Re: what shifters are you guys using on 4l80e
Hahaha referencing the HAMB in this section may fall on lost ears (eyes?). I love the HAMB but those guys are pure oil n gears in a world of computers and wires.
I'm running a Kilduff Twist'd shift, which is a rather unconventional semi-home-built spring assisted shifter. They are a bit too pricey, but handmade in the US. The problem with using an older car shifter is that the 4l80e needs detent positions for all the gears (1 more than most pre-80's cars ever had). You can use an auto shifter off really anything, but you might lose the "1" position. This is easiest with a friend. Person A is in the truck, Person B is under the truck on the trans. Take a ruler and a piece of paper. Put the truck in PARK (lock the ebrake) Lay the shift cable on the paper @ 0 on the ruler and mark the point on the paper. Have person B move the range selector to R: Mark the position. Now move it to N: Mark the position. D :Mark the position. Thats the ESSENTIAL spacing you need to get it into and out of gear. (Continue on for 3,2,1 etc as needed to find the detent spacing for the lower gears) You should end up with a series of hash lines about 3/4-1" apart on a 4-6" overall throw. Each of those marks is a detent point. You can now go pull as many old shifters out of the junkyard as you want, and you'll know if they work right away, based on the detent spacing. You COULD also use this template to cut a pair of plates, notch them for the cable barrel, and make your own.

I use the B&M Quicksilver shifter. Works and fits well on a 4L80E.
Lowest cost \ Best bang for the buck shifter I could find during my build. |
